I think a race should be a mix of up, down and cross-wind portions, as in sailing, so you need to be as efficient as possible in every configuration... not only one.
Going downwind is the less challenging one, so may appear simple, however, when it comes to race/competition, it is all about being first... so there is probably more than just relying on random positioning of the kite and board to get pulled downwind in top position.
In the very low end of a given kite, going fast dowind require good technique to avoid colapsing of the kite, I would be curious to learn more about that, if anyone has experience to share?

Having never kited effectively, I have a question about downwind legs when racing a kite.

On a quick sailboat (skiffs, sportsboats - pretty much anything fast with an assymetric spinnaker) going dead downwind is not fast - it is faster to sail angles and utilise the apparent wind.

Is this true of kiting as well, or do you just point dead downwind and send it?

Yeah your probably right jbow.. Racing downwind wouldn't be that flash, but doing downwinders is wicked. Also depends on where you kite I suppose. I can think of loads of locations where doing downwinders just wouldn't suit, but on the flip side I can think of some epic downwinder locations.

If you don't like them, simple, don't race in them and let people that want to go ahead and quit whinging about it.

If you want to complain about what someone else organises, organise your own race, or go home sit on the couch with a big jar of vaseline and rub one out, at least it should give you something to do you can't b**ch about.

"Can't be a man, because he doesn't smoke, the same cigarettes as me"

What I would like to see is more girls kiting. And because most girls don't have a death wish, (I mean - think they are indestructible like 15 to 90 year old guys) more of them would probably be keen to learn if they didn't get the impression is was based on 90% air time and 10% on the water. You don't need 25+ winds to have a good time on the water. People ask me if its hard on the arms or is it physically demanding and the answer is no. It's as easy as riding a pushbike. Once you learn, you don't even have to hardly concentrate on what you doing. Some people like down winders, some people like cruising and some like jumps. It’s a sport for everyone, not just adrenaline junkies.

It's hard to see the humour in all this when it's dressed up in so much homophobia. I've deleted the other two spinoff threads, in case anyone was wondering where they went.

Or if you were wondering if Laurie had a sense of humour failure about polling gayer than GreenPat. This was my call on the 'inappropriate material' rule.

Sorry Greenpat but you can hardly say that by calling something gay is homophobia. It can only be so if you think there is something wrong with being gay. Gay is the new word for girlie, and is just a bit of fun.
Hardly a reason to bring out your big forum deleting stick.

One of my best kiting mates is gay - and he is also one of the most hardcode kiters I know.... he quite often uses this term to refer to things that are a bit girlie or soft....

I think most gays would be offended if you felt there was a reason to delete things because you are scared of offending them....we're in the 21 century ..

you have a place as the forum police - but dont take it so seriously for gayness sake.

It may have been, but that doesn't mean I'm going to put them back.

While most of the posts are harmless, some of them were quite immature and off-colour.
