Correct, some over seas hifi stores will always declare the value of shipment at around 850-950 Aus dollars even when the actual price is much higher then that.
If you buy your DSLR from big name US stores like B and H they will give the actual value so you'll be slugged with the 10% gst on top of the price you pay.
My tip would be to use UPS or any one of the couriers as they will have people to do the custom clearing for you. They'll just ring you up and ask for a credit card number.
