Thought I'd ask cause I had one of the most hardcore session in a long time yesterday, and I sort of got concern for... well, everybody else who went out in this perfectly nuts southerly!
I'm not sure how it was in Sydney as I went up the coast with some mates, but gosh, I saw some of the freakiest thing ever happening yesterday! I know I get overpowered easily (and well, 12m2 was may be a bit glutton of me...), but it's the first time I saw 4 of my 80 kilos + mates hanging 10m off the water!!! Impressive stuff!!!!
We eventually got hit by squalls that were some of the strongest I've ever felt, with the wind unexpectedly swinging 180 degree, I think all of us had to open their safety at least twice yesterday, I saw kites going for flights on their own, very experienced riders getting absolutely nailed, and if it was one of the most intense -and magical and awesome- session I had in a long time (unreal), I got a bit worried for the less experienced riders (and even the good ones) who went out in this hell....
So I just sort of wanted to check: is everybody OK?????

very nice session at longy yesterday, but it was a bit scary at times. going from 10knts to 30 knots in a blink of an eye, and some pretty large swell/waves to deal with.
overall very enjoyable tho.

Hey Em,

The whole weekend in Vic was pretty full on, a few points I looked at what was going on and thought it be best not to go kill myself!
Managed to cactch the tail end of it all last night for about 2 hours and that was awesome, some huge long tacks, few unexpected hang times, with the token almighty crash and little tacks to get the board back! but yes a bloody awesome session! Still grinning like an idiot!

Sounds like there were a few crew up your way fully lit! One guy out last night had an old school boxer10, blew it to pieces! tear from centre strut to next one along and all the way to the LE... just a little trashed!

Yeah, the National Surf Lifesaving Championships must have been loving it at Scarbs yesterday, despite not being much swell to surf in for the finishes of whatever races. There was not a breath of wind, just smooth water, clear skies and some serious eye candy getting around.

Curse them.

That was certainly the quickest I have ever seen a squall coming in. Came from 3 km away in about 2 minutes. You did well to last out those squalls Em.
In one morning I saw:
Wind drop to nothing- boat rescue needed for stranded kiter
30knt squall- bloke lofted 15ft over sand-dune
Tore my kite-
35knt squall-everyone pulls safety, and one kite goes 500m over unit block after safety breaks.

Pretty wild session

How did he came down without any damage?
I have benn lofted 10 - 15 ft in a 22 knots, came down, on the sand, on my face and dislocated left shoulder - auch
You've been lucky you torn only the kite

Hm... Did not! But I got smashed so hard and so quick that my release was already opened when the 4 other guys were still hanging up there, which got me to enjoy the view!

Same... And then gust coming out of nowhere: " you wish you were launching right now" type of thing!

We had no boat and team work came in hard (awesome to have good kiting buddies) and we've all helped each other recovering our boards... and bits and pieces!

30knt squall-

The guys reckon the one that hit us was closer to 40, I couldn't tell: I was either playing submarine under water or dummy skimming above it while my kite was swinging all over my wind window.... I wish I had a footage of it! Good stuff, lol... (my back loved it...)

Thank God we only had water around, but I think we all had the time to feel our guts going up our brains... (interesting picture...)

I did not, I did not! yeehee! (had enough E.R with my kites lately... Now trying to be good to them (or nearly...))

Funny: I saw the exact same thing happen where I was... It is sort of fascinating (scary but fascinating) to watch those birds taking off on their own... How far do they go???? The one I saw just went up... and up.... and higher up.... Do they ever come back down or do they eventually reach heaven and live a happy kite life ever after????

Agree!!! How bloody good was that hey!?
Will preciously keep that blissful smile on my face for couple of days...sigh...
All together, glad to hear no one got hurt...

Awesome session the day was filled with drama and intense wind.

Those gusts that came through were over 40 knots and we all hit the water one by one it was like a domino effect, and it was the first time I got lofted , I must say I enjoyed it staying up in the air for so long and looking around knowing I had plenty of water around me , although it was not a good feeling when I could not get back to my board as it was so far away and the wind was to strong, thanks Big Kev for retrieving my board.

To bad about the damaged kites and the one that went flying on its own two blocks away from the beach , funny enough no damage to the kite , but Sundra its time to get a new kite, anyway you wont know yourself on a new Rebel.

To the Campaign Crew another day filled with drama and some great kiting in between those gusts, its been a great summer of downwinders and adventure , cant wait till the summer season kicks in again.Im going to miss those downwinders.

Thanks again for all those looking out for one another and its good to see EM you did not trash another Rhino.

Sunny Coast started pumping at about 4pm. Echo and I were watching it on the net coming up the coast. We parked a car, drove 15km back down the coast, pumped up in about 10kts E thinking we were crazy. Within about 10mins it picked up to 20kts to 25kts SSE - had such an awsesome session. The waves were really smooth and the ocean and sky looked so wild.

Was so pumped by the end - such big air.

hey Danza/wandaful the guy who got rescued by the fire brigade boat in the morning did he send a case of beer to the crew in the boat or is going to buy it for the next campaign up there? thanks K..
Sundra is lucky the string broke for him cause he looks like he's about 38 kilos, my guess is he would have at least landed on the third floor of the block of flats or least the top of the pine trees...

Chronic your not wrong Sundra probably weighs about 45 kilos , if anyone can get going in light winds its Sundra.I remember on a light day I was struggling on my 16 and Sundra went flying past me on a 12, being light has its advantages.

I think we all have one more campaign in us and thats Green Island next big southerly were all heading down the coast for an action packed weekend of kitesurfing talking **** and drinking.

Hopefully the wind gods will be kind to us over the easter break , bring on the wind.

Em / Danza

I checked it yesterday (Mon) and it was going off... no one out clear sky and perfect. If only I could have hit it.

Those squalls were insane... you know when **** has hit the fan when your kite is parked off to one side completely depowered and your aqua planning on you stomach across the ocean. Dan I think you correct in saying that those squalls could have been over 40 knots, judging by the graphs I checked that night.... still had me grinning, but also frustrated at the same time.
