Have a North 06 kite with valves falling off left right and center, need bulk
glue to hold her together. Is there a brand of glue anyone can recommend?

The kites 3-4months old pretty great hey.

wow - that is some sucky quality. Can you not get a warranty job on the bladders?

I've used clear silicone on valve areas before but that has been on the valve itself. Perhaps some sikaflex would do it but you'd want to try it on a test piece before potentially buggering the whole bladder.

The other thing that works is heat. Scan the web for a guide to repairing bladders with an iron and a pencil wrapped in baking paper. Make sure you get the temp right though or you will melt long holes in the bladder...

Good luck.

Bought it from Kitepower, just emailed them about it, and and they have been
really good to do business with, really fast service.

I'm sure Steve will have the answer, but right now
it's blowing, and just want to patch it up and get out there.

Just wondering what a brand name of the tiny bit of glue that comes with
all kites, looking for a bigger version.

Tried the iron thing ages ago, but man I can't even iron a shirt

cheers for the help

I just received some glue from Kitepower along with useful advice from Steve.
"Kitefix" glufix adhesive, it's not cheap, $29 a tube, but I'm sure it's enough to do plenty of repairs.
I've had a couple of Valves come unglued from the bladder, probably just from the heat. About to glue em on now, I'll let you know how it goes...

hello,
i have been thru 5 nipples in the last 10 days ....
most of them on North Rebel just over one year old !
had also problems with my best yarga but 3 years old. so much for the north quality ......
i used first the glue given with the kites but since they only give tinny tubes i had to get another one.
got Tarzan grip general purpose adhesive. it is clear, water resistant and flexible.
so far so good and only 3.57 for a big tube.

Hi Guys,

You can go into anycycle shop and but glue in those small (4 inch) tubes for gluing patches onto bike tyres. Same stuff. I think it costs around $2 or so. Super easy, super accessible and small enough to keep in your kite bag.

I don't want to diss anyone's suggestions, but, i have tried alot of these ideas and they haven't worked! (for me anyway .... calm down )
Bicycle patch glue ; thumbs down, would not stick to the bladder (but different brands of glue may give different results on different bladders)
pool patch glue ; no good
tarzan grip (aqua) : no
araldyte : not a chance, peeled strainght off the bladder

the problem with most of these is they would not bond with the bladder material.
do a test on some scrap pieces before you try anything.

I have found the glue needs to be (and this is the important part) an ethylene or polyethylene based glue.

I bought a tube of ethylene glue from bunnings to do some valve repairs and it worked well (as long as i got the seal right)

I'll try to dig up the pot of glue when i get home and post it's name here.

but IMO the best solution to detached valves is the stick on ones available from all good kite suppliers.

Hmmm...

Bladders going pear shaped....
Valves leaking...
Glue not glue-ing things back together...

Any body ever thought of trying a foil instead? My Venom never has problems with valves, bladders or needing a new tube of glue...

It's just a suggestion (at the risk of starting a war...hehehehe)

Foils are excellent for land kiting eg mountainboarding, snowboarding and buggies.

Have thought of using them in the water, but then quickly dismissed the thought

I have just had to replace the entire set on a leading edge and the only thing that really does the job are the ustick generic replacement nipples available online. If you try with glues it will make it impossible to get a flat clean surface when the glue inevitably fails. The old ones come off with hot water ( in most cases they were falling off). I find it strange that hot water from the tap is enough to release the original seal when it is necessary for most kites to be left in a closed hot car or else they are stolen when kiting. This is the reason given for their "malfunction".

Hi. I am still using 2 of my kites that were repaired ages ago. See this previous thread: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=29871

There is no sign of deterioration in the adhesion so I will be using this solution again if same issue arrises. Only concern is that it's really an overnight job for the glue to set. Cheers, Warren

1st and easiest option - Take them right off and apply the stick on valves

https://www.kitepower.com.au/catalog/product_17053_UStick_Bladder_Valves_cat_325.html

2nd, harder, but easily doable, especially for Mcgyver types - Get some glue like the Gluefix brand.
www.kitepower.com.au/catalog/product_17278_KiteFix_GluFix_cat_325.html

Then some Tear Aid
www.kitepower.com.au/catalog/product_17085_Tear_Aid_Bladder_Repair_Patches_cat_325.html

Cut a patch that covers the valve are and overlaps by at least 2-3cms, then cut a circular hole in the patch as close to the size of the base of the valve as possible.
Apply the glue under the peeling off valve, and apply a bead of glue all the way around the edge of the valve base (not too much). Then stick the Tear Aid patch over the valve and press it down hard.

Have something like a large 1/2" drive socket handy to put over the valve and then put a phone book on the socket.

Wait a couple of hours, best overnight, then remove weight and scoket and test inflate, always works for me!

Wouldn't the easiest option-since the kite is only 3-4 months old-be to return it to the retailer under warranty?

@loco4olas - he said it was a 2006 North kite, I'm just assuming it was not a brand new 2006 North kite?
If it is actually old stock, but new from a shop then it should be covered under warranty, thats the law.
And yeah, thats the easiest option if the importer has the spares in stock.

@Scarver
One per pack, yep, a bit exxy you are thinking (me too), but I am not the importer, I just buy them and resell them, I don't set the pricing. There is a need and someone has seen it, even if it is a bit of a gouge, it still saves a bladder that could cost up to $300 on a North kite, so its worth it. Its worth it anyway to have your favourite kite fixed for $20 and be back on the water!!

Send them all up to me and I will fix them if you don't want to do it yourself.

Have you just purchased the kite new from a shop, or used?
