i,ve taken my new bow kite out today ,im not very experienced and the kite would drop out of the sky as soon as i tried to take off. there was another smaller kite up today who had no problems.do i need to adjust the amount of depower on the kite,as i may be letting out too much

I'm not sure if it's any different on any other brands of kite, but on all the airush kites I have flown pulling the trimline IN increases the depower. If you are stalling too much let it out more.

What brand?

(Do any brands of kite havea reverse depower system?)

Its probably just practise stuff. Itll take a little time for your flying skills and board skills to be the same as all the people that are already going.
Keep practising and youll get it soon.

I saw a bow kite doing that today.... were you at boat harbour?

The kite would be at the zenith and then the leading edge would just drop and the whole thing would fall and float straight into the middle of the window.

I'm no expert on bows but keeping more tension in the rear lines should stop that.

If its what schmik said, that happened to me when i was learning. And although what he said sounds like it would work, i found that depowering the kite by moving the bar away got the kite back under control better. Took a while to get used to that as it is kindof weird, but thats what i found anyway.

Hi, Its got to do with how a wing works, basically the air travelling over the top of the wing travels faster (than the air passing under the bottom)causing low pressure over the wing sucking the wing up. The faster the wing flys the faster the air flows over the wing the more lift it creates. With a bow kite if you pull on the bar you change the angle of attack, that is the angle that the air hits the front of kite which can stall the kite. So if you let the bar out all the way it will fly better.
If you like you can call me and I may be able to explain it better on the phone Neil 0419251499

Mike,

It was not him. The guy yesterday at boat harbour had an very old C-Kite which had not enough pressure in the front tube and as it looked like no clue what he was doing.

That was for sure. I know that it is no laughing matter but when the kite dived at you and you hit the ground that sure was funny (in a dark humor kind of way). Maybe there is something wrong with me for finding that funny.

BTW, if you remained standing the lines would have got you. But on the ground they missed you by 5 foot. You are brave man to help that guy.

I can imagine that it looked very funny.... for me it was like being in the middle of a war jumping into a trench running for cover :)

The best joke was that after I landed his kite and asked him how many lessons he had.... he told me he had around 10 hours....

This was actually the second/third incident with this guy on that day.... unfortunately you have not seen the funniest one in the morning when he launched this 15 sqm piece of **** in 25 knots and was face planted around 30-50 meter down the beach...

Cheers

I had my bow stall all the time until I managed to discover that I actually had the depower too high after around 15 or so sessions (ie front lines too tight).

I think the best method is to place your bar center; so between sheeted in and out and then the make sure that at that point both front and back line tension is roughly equal, do this by adjusting the connection points on the kite and observing the 'sag' in the lines when you fly the kite.

I've got my back lines at the closest connection to the kite so they are as short as possible and my front lines at the furthest so they are as long as possible. Makes a world of difference, the kite responds so much better and powers up more easily, although I have to be careful now not to flare the kite . I was able to stay up and riding with so little effort... its like a different kite.
