I am going sailing around the area in October and would like to take my kites so am also interested in the answer to this question.

What about the jelly fish when do they start to become a problem? Are there any areas that you aren't allowed to kite in around the Whitsundays? Anywhere you should definatly go?

Thanks

As far as I know you can kite on Hamo. A few years back Robbie Treharne had his gear up there during Race Week and was launching on the Resort side beach. Its pretty gusty in a Sou easter on that side though, there would have to be some great spots up there not necessarily on Hamo though. Ideally access to a boat would be the best to get you to Whitehaven or other spots, I think over in Airlie beach theres a few points that'd be good for it.This time of year the SE trade winds are pretty reliable with solid 15-20 knots most of the time. Not really sure what its like in the wet season (Xmas) but I know this much- it will be friggin hot and humid and I think you gotta worry about stingers (box jellyfish) too.
On that subject I'm off to Race Week next week, is anyone else going? Any one thinking of taking there gear? I may do it if theres anyone else around, especially someone with a speed boat!! I'll supply the beer if you got the boat!! Let me know if your keen.

Yep stingers will be a problem. Try Conway beach or Bowen on the mainland. Conway is just south of Airlie and Bowen is 1hr north. (Crocs also plentiful at Conway but I still got a wicked session in there). As for stingers just wear a full length wetsuit, fin sox or booties and if you want a helmet and you're pretty much covered.

There are a few locals around so try and ask them.

I grew up in the Whitsunday’s, and the common belief was that there were no stingers on the Islands. However, I know over the last few years their have been some bad stings on the islands, so it must of just been local myth, maybe to protect the tourism industry

Roughly November to May, but can be earlier if there is lots a rain and northerlies.

I spend years sailing and swimming and never got more than the odd blue bottle sting (still blody hurts). But this might just have been luck.

i worked on hamilton island for a bit and i found that they were really tight when it came to just about anything fun, i didnt see anything on the water other than the stuff they were renting out.

Hamilton Island with a south easterly blowing Ok of the marina in the channel, but dont drop your kite, really need some sort of a rescue craft. On the resort side northerly only of any use. If there is a wind try to get a boat and get to Whitehaven it spectacular.
