a friend of mine that is just getting into kitesurfing told me last night of a kitemare that they had and it has since turned them back to windsurfing. so that it doesnt happen again i thought that i would pass it on.

alot of people kiteing in perth use a reride system were the bar goes up one line when you let go of it and the other 3 lines go slack. what happens if you snap the line(at the kite end) that the leash is on. your natural recation should be to let go of the bar, wrap it up and swim in. but if it is the line that the leash runs off that you snap when you let go of the bar it can just slide up to the stopper and still hold power. leaving you getting pulled by the kite and no way out!!!
the only way around this that i can think of is a quick release on your leash. i have been rideing with one for a while now but only because it comes standard with the naish bar and never realy thought anything of it but now i am glad i have one and i think that everyone should have one as well as a quick releas on the chicken loop.
anyone else got any ideas??

How about crashing the kite and swimming down the attached side until you have enough line to depower it and then do your packdown proceedure. I use the new flexifoil bar which runs the line through the actual bar and so does away with the need for a leash. I knew when I bought it there had to be something that wasn't perfect and-It was after I'd done a few forward rolls on a 14m North, with the centre lines twisted, and the wind going from f5-f7 I had no option but leash out. Immediately the reride ring and ball hits the twists and sends the kite looping through the power zone.Lucky I also had a witchard quick release on the chicken loop.Trying to customize a wichard, with a sealed bearing to untwist the centre lines. Got the chance to see and try the new Naish UDS bar in the UK. AMAZING!UDS bar +Wook 2(takoon) =the bees knees for wave riders.

working down 1 line might work in less than 10knots but its no option in high winds when you are most likly to snap a line

Well if it's blowing that strong, get out your sea anchor and marker buoy clip it to the chicken loop and say bye-bye kite, and hope you can pick it up later.

Showing our age here.
Speaking of which, I was astounded to discover that Fremantle Video Ezy don't stock "every which way but loose" (Clint Eastwood and the orangutan), not even in the classics section where it belongs!!
And I spoke to some punk lookin bloke last week who'd never heard of Van Halen!!!?? I'm losing the will to live........

The stopper helps when your line doesn't break because it stops you having to swim all the way up to your kite to get your bar back after you ditch the bar. If you look after your lines they shouldn't snap in the first place!
