Has anyone had a bow perform involuntary kite loops?

The girlie went for an impressive drag on her Turbo Diesel the other day. After a stack it re-launched by itself with the help of a gust, and then performed a series of powered up kite loops.

Her safety exploded under the force of these loops but the kite retained full power and the little girlie was dragged by the leash until a friend made the scene (big thank you to Tone!....our first born shall be your namesake) and caught her kite on one of it’s brief water visits between re-launching and looping again.

The save was made less than 30 meters from boats, from which she was initially at least 150 meters clear of and the girlie was a shaken heart in mouth moment away from dumping her kite onto them

Best as we can figure is that as the kite re-launched either one of the bridles snagged on the wing tip, or the back line wrapped around the bar.

ive seen it happen, the line gets wrapped around the bar when your not looking at it while your concentrating on relaunching it, after the first loop the outside line ties the bar to the ccenter lines and after that you have maybe 1 loop before the safety will stop workking , and then no hope of stopping it from looping or pulling it out of the loop.. best option is to pull your safety release and dump the whole rig , wait for it to float to the water and land leading adge down then get pick it up or wait for it to float somewhere. Which is why it's important to allways be able to release the safety and chickenloop from your harness

Not sure what you mean by safety exploded. I have seen the bridle detach from the kite on the TD. If you have one check that it is connected using a proper larks head. The one I had a go of wasn't it was just threaded through the holes and onto the knot, nt looped back on itself. It was the second attachment from the trailing edge that came off.

To prevent the steering lines from wrapping around the bar when you drop your kite, try sliding some platic tubing over them. It stiffens the lines and prevents the nasties. You can get the tubing in various clours from Whitworth Marine.

Hi Fitzy

I would really like to understand your idea a little more clearly.
I how long are the tubes? - don't they cause wear at the pulleys?

Can you expand a little please.

Thanks
Paul

Paulio – Yeah I’ll claim it! Pleased you enjoyed the show big fella.

FreeFerty – Exploded = the chicken safety self activated probably due to the several hundred kilos of force placed on it during the initial series of loops. I was focused on voicing my best ‘girl in peril’ scream at the time so automation works for me! Shame it retained full power anyway.

Dachopper – Comforting (and not) to know I’m not the first. I was beginning to think I had a knack for discovering system flaws in new kite designs. Bugger…. there goes my crash test dummy career.
