I'm going to book my sister in for lessons this summer, after which we need to get her a kite. What size is suitable for a 11yo weighing 36 - 40 kg? would a 5m be a good size for her in summer?

i have a 14m naish torch 2 for sale.that should do nicely.

nah, ok, seriously, yes i think 5m would be right.sounds small but since she is a beginner she wont be going out when its really windy and considering she is a girl her strenght is not as much as a guys (no ofence to women) so a 5m sounds good to me.

maybe a hybrid, with the extra depower would help. but i dont know is hybrids come in 5m? the school will help you out.

shes been in a swimming squad for around 3 years now, we tried gettin her into surfing but it didnt work but shes showing alot of interest in kiting. look at Gisela paulido she won pkra at 11!!!!
maybe a little 6 or 4 dna or a 5m rebel? or a lil vapor so she can go big

My advice i s that the first thing you get here is a trainer kite .Get her to fly it like its second nature (particularly hard figure 8's at the ground and out of the dives )and not looking at the kite .

Then you can think about a kitesurf kite for her

You could also shorten the lines to 20-25m
