Hay gang, have the opportunity to stay in Port Douglas for a week or so,can any local kiter there tell me if it is as good as I'm told around 4 mile beach and surrounds...are there many 'bities' in the water around November? can I get to stay within walking distance from the water to carry kite gear?...Roo

you might be lucky and score a north-easter, but it is unlikely you will get any wind in november mate.

if the rains have started properly you will need a stinger/gimp suit too, the jellies will be out. i think the crocs get most bitey between october and march, breeding season, but they are not really a problem around port. the stingers are what you should worry about.

the far south end of 4 mile beach is the designated kite area, the other end gets too crowded and is a no go for kiting. the barrier street beach is the spot where it happens.

plenty of great, deserted spots further north. get over the river and check out cow bay, noah and thornton beaches for good spots to kite, or just to get away from the tourists at port. (watch out for crocs at noah).

(i am no local, but i used to live at cape trib)

Rooey,

Stamp was right about the lack of wind in November. Our season pretty much runs from May to about October. Having said that, last year we were kiting right up through Christmas in some pretty regular South Easters.

The weather patterns have definately changed up here and this season has been CRAPOLA.

The stinger season starts in November. The Box jelly fish head for cover in the South Easterly winds but we are a little unsure about the Irrikanji, they're the little suckers that pack some serious punch. We just wear stinger suits and hope for the best. You could pick up a stinger suit for $40.

Bring your gear you never know your luck. Launch at the southern end of Four Mile. Not sure about accommodation most of the hotels are located at the northern end of Four Mile and thats well.... a four mile walk to the kiting spot. Hire a bicycle the beach is really wide with plenty of hard sand.

Hope this helps.

Contact Brett (0427 498 042) at Windswell at the southend of Four Mile Beach. He will give you all the info you need. I had a ball when I was up there. Check out the Iron Bar at night, or the one at the backpackers (Dougies). While you are in Cairns, check out the Liquid Force Cableski park. Best in Queensland!
