I would assume like Lake Cath., Summerset would have a similar problem of gusty conditions etc.

I've heard of quite a few kites become one with the tree's at Lake Cath., (and possibly similar to Summerset), so until going upwind is second nature, and possibly handling gusty conditions, stick with the sunny coast for now. If you have an experienced kiter with you, then feel free to give it a shot and report back, but check with the locals on any bans or anything etc.

Most inland lakes have problems with gusty and swirly conditions due to the surrounding landform and vegetation.

I figure you need a bigger board and a smaller kite. This way you can go out with a smaller kite and hold it all together during the gusts.

Realplayer,

Somerset is surounded by too many hills, however when the S/W winds hit it may funnel up the valley. I'm going to go out and have a look when the southwesterlies hit in a month or two to see if it is possible, cause I've been thinkin' about it for a while.[}:)]

Wivenhoe -not allowed.

There are a few other smaller lakes around S/E Qld but they all appear to be sheltered by hills.

Hi Realplayer

I also live on the Sunshine Coast and did a lot of my learning at Lake Weyba. Being so close to the sea, the wind is often not contaminated. This time of year is not good though. It is much better in summer when the SE winds are steady for much of the day. Also, you can walk out for about 300m and still be in knee deep water. It does become gusty there and sometimes the wind does drop out however, it is a great learning place. Go with someone who can help you get your kite out on the water, as you obviously have to set up your kite on the grass and there are a lot of sticks around to get caught in your lines.

I go back occasionally if I'm after a flat water session or if the ocean is way too rough but once you master the ocean, you very rarely want to go back to flat water. 2 weekends ago I did 3 downwinders in 4 days.

ive heard everywhere it bad for kitesurfing cpet for sunshine coast!!!
my opinion as a long time kiteboarder is if you stay away from lakes eg catharabah and sumerset it will make you a much better kiter, kawana beach seems to be the best kind of beach to go out
