have the option of being flown to karratha for a short job. very lucrative, but it's during my holidays. So I'll only take it if the kiting looks ok.

The job is mid-september.

I've never been up that part of the world, but I will be provided with a car, so if you need to get out of town to have a good time, that shouldn't be too hard.
I need to know relatively soon so I can accept or refuse the job.

Anyone have any info?

Cheers

I lived there for 4 years in the 80's, learnt to windsurf on Dampier harbour. I seem to remember it being pretty windy a lot of the time, with easterlies in winter and strong sea breezes (20-25) in the hotter months after midday. September.....don't know whether the sea breeze would have fully kicked in by then.....a call to the Karratha met office or airport would probably give you the info you need. The only problem i would see for kiting was that the wind in Dampier harbour was pretty much straight onshore a lot of the time. Some excellent islands offshore if you have access to a boat. I'm sure some more recent residents could provide better info.

a friend of mine lived there a few years back, said his neighbours were kiters and tried to get him to go kitesurfing with them... so Karratha kitesurfers do exist.

Thanks for the input everyone. Also to Puppet on a string, who emailed me a link to a fantastic bureau of meteorology web page where you can find out the average windspeed and direction at either 9am or 3pm for any moth for lots of places around Aus. Gun site. Just brilliant.

See www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/wind/selection_map.shtml

If it doesn't work, type in "windrose" into the search engine in the BOM site.

Laurie, it's such a great site, do you want to put a link to it? Questions about different places are so commonly asked, and this info is just so good. I've spent ages contemplating where else I want to go on holidays.

I think I've probably built the site up a bit much now. Everyone else will probably think it's a dud.
