Bellevue,

I think a couple of guys used to go out and make a lot of trouble for themselves and others at Rose Bay and ticked a lot of people off. The harbour is intensely busy and if I were you I would go elsewhere.

Wind is often gusty, too much traffic, no where to launch, ferrys, sea planes, yachts, 18ft skiffs, ships like floating apartment blocks creating massive wind shadows, choppy water, booze cruising luxury motor boatd with drunk ass#$es at the helm.

All in all a great place to kite don't you think??? Make your way to the Bay or to the ocean beaches like Long Reef.

Good winds and Peace

:0 listen to Kitehard,
Stay away from the harbour.
If you have no car then take a bus North to Narrabeen or Longreef or South to La Perouse or Brighton Le-Sands.

its on the northern beach's, look for deewhy on a map and its between there and collaroy, you can't miss it, a huge headland with a 18 hole golf course on it is the giveaway.
Sat morn looks crap, sat arvo/evening looks good, sunday morning looks good, might go soft in the arvo.

For those that don't know there's new sign on the beach advising to stay one side of the sign unless you are outside the surf line... don't launch in the flagged area as some idiot did yesterday.

Hey,

You can Walk up to Castlereagh St from Darling harbour and catch the 302 bus to Sans Souci (Ask the bus driver where to stop for kiting)
You can only kite from the Baths infront of the Novotel and to the right of the airport(looking out to sea)

I remember hearing somewhere that Kiting is actually banned in the harbour anyway.

Winds should be light this weekend so hope you have a big kite or big board

hey,
A friend who lives in the vicinity of Rosebay just told me that there are kiters who kite there in the past. I believe that kiting is banned in the harbour, can anyone confirm this? or advise otherwise

I think people used to kite in rose bay, they shouldnt be doing it now tho... From memory it may have been those kiters that helped get it banned in the harbour, as rose bay is also used for seaplanes...

i launch from the ophra house and then ride under the harbour bridge and try to launch the ferries before i go out the heads.

Seriously, no you don't want to kite the harbour. If you are thinking about it you should probably have a lesson where you would learn how to do a proper site assessment!!
it is banned as well as bondi and coogee for good reason as well.

And I believe Manly too when there are surf patrol flags up, but you can go once they patrols are gone... anyone know if this is correct.

It's be good if aksa or the nsw branch had a list of area's like this published on the web somewhere so there is no confusion...

Hey dudes,

Manly is strictly prohibited from flying ALL types of kites. Even if you launch a single line kite at Manly, "the man" will be on you in minutes and can confiscate your kite (yes, even the little single line diamond one with the bow tie tail) and can issue you a fine.

You wont even get your kite pumped before the clubbies and ranger are on to you. ALL KITE FLYING ON MANLY BEACH IS STRICTLY PROHIBITED!

Forget the Harbour area, it has been banned for windsurfing for years so why do you think that the kiting would be exempt?

This is why there are only limited spots in Sydney for kiting and also why those few other spots are so crowded, for one there aren't many good spots with clean wind and beaches facing the right direction and for two, some of the beaches that are good are too crowded ie Manly, Bondi etc.

The same idiots that got it banned in the Harbour were the ones who got it banned at Bondi. A selfish "look at me everyone" attitude. One of them even admitted they kited there because "more chicks watched you" LAME!

Talk to the locals or clubbies if no one else is out and play by the rules in Sydney .... or anywhere for that matter.

Kitehard is spot on about the harbour and why it is banned, same goes for Bondi and Coogee. I think there is one perp who still goes out into the harbour because he lives near Rose bay, but he will get his, and he already has been dealt with by the authorities and members of the public.
SYDNEY HARBOUR is officially banned to kiters by Waterways. Bondi is banned by Waverly Council.

Its going to be SE today around 10 -15 knots, its kiteable right now, I live near the water in Botany Bay.
Wanda and Boat harbour will be good today, maybe Longreef if the wind is strong enough.
It is easy to get from Darling Harbour to Brighton or Dolls Point in Botany bay. 303 bus from Central!

Hey, As much as it pains me to say. There is nothing illegal about kite surfing in Rose bay or any part of the harbour. And there is nothing that can stop you from launching from ANY beach! As a "kite surfer" you are classed by-law as a "water vessel". Everything else is a "guidline" and with good reason because any one who launches in either a populated area or with-in the harbour should be locked up!

I would like to praise the work of the AKSA. But when fools kite boarding in Rose Bay in a gusty on-shore can't be stopped it shows that their work is not complete.

You are probabaly correct, the work of AKSA will never be complete, however it will be a lot easier if we all co-operate with them and all the various authorities around Australia that have control over our waterways and our access to them.

If you delve a little deeper you will find that Waterways are 100% correct in claiming that kitesurfing is banned on Sydney Harbour. They cab use a number of laws to prosecute any kiter, and confiscate their gear too.
Negligent Navigation is one rule they told us they can ping a kitesurfer for, anytime, anywhere in the Harbour.
Just because they have not bothered to do so yet with the few habitual perps that go there, does not mean they can't or won't, especially if there is an incident.

Don't go there, please, for your own sake and that of the whole kitesurfing community in Sydney, we tend to get tarred with the same brush as the crazy people who break the rules.

The harbour has to be one of the crappiest places in Oz to kite anyway, hell gusty and crowded with nervous boat drivers.
