I am thinking of laying down the bucks for a crossbow but would like to find out from you guys who allready have them what they are like to self launch. Almost all of my kiting is done alone so its a big deal for me.Also whats the setup like time like, with regard to tangles in bridles and stuff.

thanks Nev

Set up is easy, probably easier than a traditional kite.
self launching is possible i believe but you would probably have to head into the water to do it which is so simple, just pull a back line.
we tried a self launch the other day but was a bit difficult as we had too much sand on the thing which meant it couldnt move!!
The bridles are so simple i mean really simple dont see how they can tangle.

Pop down to woodies ow if your around i can almost guarantee there is at least on X bow there now.

I dont understand how come you cant launch it in the normal way?It is still a kite with a blade that cuts the wind I really dont get it. why cant I just fold the corner and pop it off that

If the kite isn't compatible for a standard sand-launch;
(fold wing-tip, load with sand, sand flicks off, go).......then it's a dog.
Kite bettys are gay.

waveslave,
i think i speak on behalf of the majority of the kiters and windsurfers that use this extremely helpful and often entertaining forum when i say...
SHUT THE **** UP
No one wants to listen to your self-opinionated crap. You are possibly the most arrogant, ignorant, self-righteous brat I have ever had the displeasure of knowing (as far as reading your messages go that is). Of your 500 or so messages, at least 95% have been a negative comment.
"this is crap because of this..."
"this happens because of this and you are wrong and i am right..."
"i know everything..."
"all kites that arent mine are crap..."
"there is no skill involved in this..."
"kiting is going to be banned..."
"if you cant do this, then youre crap..."
"kiting flat water is gay..."
There is not enough wind these days to have to listen to your pointless crap...come back in summer when my forum surfing goes into decline.
I need to sleep. Im cranky.

You're stressed mate.
Didn't you score a session today?
I had a truely awesome one.

Was that post positive enough?
Was it up to your high standards?

(PS. Don't take life so seriously, it's only a game show, man.)

Hey prof.

It can self launch no prob. I just haven't managed one yet.

I have tried folding up the tips, but because of their shape, I did not feel safe doing it. Today, there were so many guys around that I didn't have to self launch.....but I know I would have tried again, no sweat....it is a very safe kite I feel.

this is just an educated guess, but...

wouldn't it be possible to self launch the nova/x-bow kites in much the same fashion as the Wipika 5th line method... that is, tether the bar to a half buried board with the kite down-wind and on it's back. no sand, no weights. basically a water launch on land.

might sound crazy to those that have not self-launched a 5th this way, but if the de-power is as good as suggested then this method should not be impossible or anymore dangerous than an assisted launch (and a damn side better than an assisted launch with the help of a non-kiter or half-wit)

I HAV TO AGREE WITH WAVESLAVE, IF YOU CANT SELF LAUNCH IT IS A MAJOR FAULT IN DESIGN...
SURELY PETE THORT OF THIS, MAYBE A NEW APPROACH?
IF NOT, CRAP.

Friends, although I haven't got my Crossbow yet users on other forums are full of praise for the self launchability of these kites. I have even heard witness accounts of a guy self launching the thing somehow without even going to the kite (not exactly sure how this worked, he apparently tugged on the lines somehow and it flipped up and hot launched - I think).

What I do know is that you can definitely "relaunch" on sand/land in the same way as you can on water (i.e. just pull on one of the lines). The kite just flips over and away you go.

The crossbow is easy to self launch using the same method you would use on the water for a leading edge down situation. I did this easily on land and in the water.
I'm sure it can be launched the traditional way too, although I never did that on my test flight. Hudson assured me it can be done that way.
The crossbow also comes with a front line ring that you can clip a leash to, so that you can self land it that way if you have to.
The safety system of letting the bar go, even is very strong winds, works, the kite will not lift off and power up unless you pull the bar back to you and pull on a real line leader.

This safety system is hard to fault. I am sure that some people will discover some ways to stuff things up, after all we are human, and we are dealing with an unpredictable force of nature.

Thanks for the info. Steve.

The problem with only being able to self-launch on land as you would on water (a FN piece of cake, )is that you need more room and there is the added issue of kite damage from ground?

I am going to get an old pillow and fill it with sand next time I have the chance and see if I can do a trad. launch....I'm hopeful that it can be done

But if you want to go out...you will find a way to launch the kite safetly and get good at it.

Nick

There seems to be some confusion with launching terminology?

When you crash your kite into the piss and you need to get underway again.....
That launch is called a deepwater relaunch.
Not a self-launch.

When you launch from the beach with no assistance from a kite betty....
That launch is called a self-launch.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

(There's also another launch called a drift-launch but I won't open that can-o-worms.)

No need for a correction slaved
I am sure the kite can be launched from the beach without assistance.
And as I said, in 2 ways.
The traditional way (fold tip and sand it) I have not tried myself, but I have been assured by Hudson it can be done.

Assisted launch is always preferred, but self launch ability is very important. I see no issue there with the Crossbow.

Thanks,

Thought id clear the air on this topic I have been flying the crossbow for three weeks now and she fly's like a dream in this three weeks i have done a self launch simply by putting sand on the wingtip like you would do with any other kite but without folding the leading edge and not too much sand no problem and also self landed it by placing at the side of the window and sheeting the bar out and crossing the right side of the bar to the left and down she goes safely flat on the leading edge simple.

I gotta tell you guys you will need to be poking the "fainting goats" first as sometimes it maybe just sleeping. And no dont poke it with that.
But yes "fainting goats" are the go. First place the "fainting goats" on the corner of your kite then second wait for it to come to and walk off your kite and there you go.
