I think I'm going stir crazy with this heat and lack of wind in Perth! I have taken 10 days leave with the idea of getting some good time on the water, and look at it!
I am a newby to kiting, I'm hanging for that moment everyone tells me will come when it all just clicks into place...
In the meantime, I need to find some pals to link up with for a kite- when the wind is right!
So if youre interested in meeting up at one of the Perth beaches, or even for a few days up in Lancelin in the next week, and can be patient with a girl still doing the learners-walk-of-shame with monotonous regularity, drop me a line.
In the meantime, I'm off to the beach... for a swim! (Do I pack the kite just in case, or is that a jinx!!!).

I got over that hump not so long ago. The best way I found was to do downwinders - from City Beach to Brighton or Swanny to City Beach (less crowded). The major benefit to this is you can get a couple of hours of solid kiting into one session, so things will 'click' sooner.

The wind is really bad right now - driving me crazy. I saw some people out on the river over near Pt Walter yesterday. Felt very jealous, nearly drove down there myself.

If you want to do a downwinder PM me your number and I'll contact you next time we go out.

cheers
Tim

Only jinx is when you dont & it blows
So the answer then is :
No Knickers

I hope you did some historical research before coming up with that tag. You may not know what you just let yourself in for

Knickers,

Only last week I thought I couldn't get things to "click" into place. I had previously only been out in the coastal areas, but figured I wasn't making much progress. I decided to go and find the flatest water possible and did 2 sessions at Applecross and another one Friday when the easterlies were blowing at Pt Walter. I found that having something that you could aim for (or hold a course to on the opposite shore) in both directions without too much chop was the answer and can now safely say I can ride upwind.

I think also that the shallow areas help with being able to hold your ground if you crash your kite and hence don't end up going downwind too far.

I don't think I'll be able to make it for a kite in the north, but if you're down south (Augusta - Marg's - Bunbury) I may be able to help out for this week (forecast for wind isn't looking great).

I'd go one further than puppetonastring.. I'd give the kite a permanent home in the car

Cheers

Ash

Hey, our mate Ashy she is just learning at the moment too! And she could use a pal to help her do her down winders with!

We will usually kite at the river on Melville, actually thats the only place so far she is game, but other wise woodmans pnt! She definately needs someone patient and willing to go out with her... will let her know about ur post

In the mean time, back to a some what reality, and by that i mean waiting for some decent winds and keeping cooooooool

Com'on decent winds!!!

Last week when the wind gods blessed us with some decent surf I had school, monday/thursday, work wednesday/saturday and had to burn a few million braincells on friday. Now I got some free time there's no wind! Why... oh why...:(

Well to get back to the subject. Welcome to the sport and just keep doing it it will come sooner or later. Just make sure you get down the the beaches, I've found out that's where most people go wrong. Buy gear and then don't go out just cause they don't have anyone to go there or surf with.. This is wrong, it arrouses contempt in the kiter heart:) Depending on where your "local" spot is just head down there and you'll find there is always someone around to help you out and keep you company. Melville is a good place to go, not too crowded often and nice people.

Good luck with all, cya on the water

Well, I'm back from the beach, I hadn't packed the kite but didnt jinx it, still no wind! But cool sunset thunderstorm almost made up for lack of kite-time!
There may be hope for tomorrow arvo...
But definately gonna try the river for the first time on Friday at Applecross with a friend (no pulling out now RK?!).

I have read lots of posts about stuff being stolen from cars so thats why I havent tended to carry my gear everywhere, what are the real risks of this? My car isnt flashy, but I cant hide the board (doesnt fit under the hatch cover).

Also, I got given the tag when travelling many years ago and have heard all the jokes so give it your best!

See ya at the beach,

Nic

Welcome to what will become a lifetime addiction when you can never get enough!

When I go kiting my rules for not making it obvious I'm out on the water are.....always put gear and empty bags in the boot, don't take valuables but if unavoidable find somewhere good to hide credit cards etc and do this before you get to the beach!, take your key with you (I ride with mine under my wetsuit top on a lanyard) and leave your glove box open.

If any characters look in they'll see nothing worth breaking in for and hopefully not bother!

Hope you get some wind soon :-)

There are a few of us 'learners' who have started doing fairly regular downwinders from Pinnaroo to Mullaloo. Let me know if this is local for you and I will drop you an email when we are doing them.

We do some at weekends and quite a few in mid-afternoons (the benefits of a flexible job!!)

I know the stage you are at, as I was there 2 weeks ago. I did 3 downwinders in 3 days and suddenly I am up and riding, even edging when there is enough wind, and get this i even tried a carving turn the other day. 2 weeks ago I was so frustrated, but it is right, once you get up and on the board, get out on the water and progression does seem to be fairly rapid.

Hiya,

yep I wish I had done a lot more downwinders early on, they are definately less stress and get the skills up pronto. The coast from Flozzer/City Beach to Brighton is tops. Great for a realxed low wind sesh also. No punters, lots abeach, waves, dolphins, UFOs, commets - oh and waves too.

I am looking for a regular downwind bud but haven't seemed to be able to attract as much interest Hmm I don't have bumps as attractive as the female of the species (well not to me anyhoo) but perhaps if I change my sign on to Big Reg Grundies or Mr Y Fronto LOL

A word to the wise though if you have only one kite, don't get caught half way with a set up too big for the conditions, as happened to me 1st time. Set off in low winds with a 15.5m (13-18 kts) all good 20mins later its more like 18-23 kts and serious white knuckle fever!! Geez it was funny later though - and hey I can now tie my shoelaces without bending over I think William (the cor pork chappy from Seth Afro) is still laughing about it .

If you want to do the Floz - Scarbs sometime drop me a line.
Hopefully you are a book wormy type with a mono brow and a little too hairsuite on the back (too much chunky soup) as my wifey would probably prefer that . If not well wifey will just have to take up kiting!

Good luck.

the wind on the river is quite gusty, but if you can kite there you really appreciate the winds every where else!

my sister and I are usually there as it is close to home, so if you see 2 ladies running round do not hesitiate to ask for some help, actually everyone at the river is pretty happpy go lucky, unless you are about to do something stupid! Not a large buffer zone!

Crew is more than happy to help

If the winds are a bit light we will kite at the ocean, otherwise hope to see you down on the water.

oh, btw, ur gear will be alright at the river, no thefts there etc, its just other places where bogans are around....

Hey Nic, I have a couple of friends that have just started recently and still at the walk-of-shame stage. I keep an eye out for them, in case they get into trouble, so they don't have to worry about losing their board, and have swam out to teach a self-resuce once too. We normally go to Leighton beach, and will start doing some downwinders to Cott or Swanbourne soon. PM me if you want to meet up for a kite.

Hey Knickers,
I'm new to kiting this season also but it has sort of clicked for me, still got a lot to learn but only have to do the walk in light winds when I probably shouldn't bother being out but hey I need all the time on the water I can get. I have been away on hols for a month with out my kite came back and bought a new board and am now hanging out for a kite. I work 4 on 4 off, came back to 4 on and there was wind every day just had my 4 off and you guessed it -no wind. My next days off are sun-wed and I'm planning on going up to Lancelin for at least Tuesday / Wednesday. I have use of a beach house up there but as my mates are either not into kiting or they are at work I'm currently going up on my own, PM me if you are interested or ring me on 0438992466

Downwinders are when you go downwind from the launch point, preferably with kite flying and board on feet but that’s optional for newbies - then have someone pick you up at end of the session.

I would be happy to help you out of your knickers - I mean, help you knickers, as I always say a girl in need is a friend indeed!

Na - just kidding, not in Perth - but good luck.

If you want to do a downwinder, turn up to Brighton carpark between 3.30 and 5.30pm when there is wind and someone will give you a lift up to Floreat for a downwinder.

Just stay away from Bevo.........he's well known to local police.
