G day,

Ive got a quick question about gear.

I started kiting about the end of 2002 but unfortunately had to give it up as a result of a back injury(not kite related).

At this time i was only 17 and not yet old enough for the pub. As a result of giving up kiting and some other sports and also the discovery of the pint i quickly gained a few kg's now weighing in at 85.

Wanting desperately to get back to kiting i was checking some of my old gear and was wondering if the old gear would cut it or if i need an upgrade.

Ive got a 9.5m Nash AR5 about 1999 or 2000 i think.
standard bar and lines of the same era and an rrd board bout 150cm

Also if there is someone wanting to learn with me drop us an email, im in Freo so will travel down to Woddies or the river.

Thanks.

Hey Flynno,

I'd recommend up grading to at least 04 gear for one simple reason - Safety.

The safety systems are sooo much better now, and as a learner it's a good thing to have.

There's plenty of good deals out there on 2nd hand gear.

I fly at Woodies most days, feel free to come say g'day. I fly a Gaastra stealth blue/orange white or a grey/black Naish.

Welcome back.

04 and 05 gear is still junk in terms of safety (apart from the punch out bars), 5th line isn't a safety system its a depower system. Its only this year that there has been real improvement with the SS, airush and north releases.

Real improvements this year? Like the north "will not always release quick release" and airush "find it if you can" quick release (not to mention getting hit in the head by it).

I agree safety these days is miles ahead of what it used to be in the dark old days, but there more application of KISS is required.

Oh yeah, and less hype about 1000% depower...
