It may happen (the kite ban) so get in while the going is good.

They (the Gov.) always need more $...so they sell it to private ownership, and the new owners (often the same people in the loop (Gov. & Developers & others) think it is their personal back yard. Then they make the rules and sell it on or keep it.....they now not only have their "own" beach (because they make the rules) but the value of thier speculation has increased.

Maybe...so just kite your little body out where ever, when ever you can.

leighton beach would have to be one of the best fun beachies in the perth metro. little ramps with heaps of flat shallow water betwwen waves. as far as kiting goes it could be the best thing that ever happens. if they start redeveloping it then there will always be people working there and then living there eventually so hopefully no more breakins. breakins seem to be a big problem there and if they put houses along the coast then more people would kite there coz it would be safer. weekends might be crowded but midweek would be fine, specially when it gets over 20knts it scares off swimmers and beach goers.

also leighton is probally the best beachie in perth in a westerly during winter and can get large swells and no one around at all. its just the whole break in thing otherwise i'd kite there for sure. so i hope they do develope it. they have to do something coz at the moment its an eyesaw

WAKSA had representatives on the Leighton Stake Holder Reference
Group and attended a couple of meetings where the proposed plans were discussed. The group also had representatives from the windsurfing community, local residents, the developers, government agencies and local businesses.

The plans showed an increase in facilities at Leighton for kite surfers and windsurfers, with dedicated rigging areas, wooden walkways down to the beach, showers, toilets, drop-off zone and additional parking.

Local residents who were part of the group had no objection to kite surfers using the area.

However, there is a lot of concern by local residents over this development and the impact it will have on the foreshore. Although the developers appear to want to do the "right thing" some of the locals are very wary of what might happen in the future.

If you are concerned about what might happen, then there are several local action groups that have been formed by residents. Maybe contact one of them and get involved.

WAKSA will continue their role in protecting access to beaches as best as they can.

With regards to rules at Leighton; the local council rule is that there is NO KITING SOUTH OF THE RAILWAY FOOTBRIDGE DURING SUMMER MONTHS.

The WAKSA site guides should be online by the end of this week and available in kite shops and at the locations within the next couple of weeks. The guide for Leighton clearly points out these rules.

I'm all for this development. That rail yard / dumping ground is a real eye saw and a waste of great land.

Parking and beach access will be improved and there is no way the beach will ever become a private beach.

And I'll be able to walk down to the beach from my house.

Thanks for your informative imput Alex.

I would agree with Ry, PaulG, and Cabs that development is good, as man is nature (don't argue with me on this one Greenies).

WAKSA activity and input in planning is brilliant...happy to help if needed.

Beautifying the rail road yard with some nice development would be great. Agreed 100% with Ry about the fact that people make for safety.....the vandalism and thievery along this strech is why kiters go to the logical place (surf shop & kiosk) because it has people......and nobody wants to be seen doing a dirty.

Individuals premier rank their own gear (kite, car window, phones etc.) over almost anything: safety of others, fine, claiming "ignorance." peer pressure, the list goes on and on........

No wind today and home alone.

Being part of the development team that is currently selling this land in question to developers, I have seen the plans.
They are all apartments, no more the four levels, and no further north than the footbridge. Beyond the bridge are parklands.
They estimate around 500+ apartments could be constructed.
If anyone is interested in information (from a real estate point of view) email me with your details.
