long time listener, first time caller

i've been wondering for a while about leighton being massively gusty. i always thought it was cos of the gear down at freo but it happens even in a westerly or even a bit in the nw's. a thought occurred to me tonight after a few beers that it might be the river that's causing some kind of disturbance. any thoughts or is this too nerdy weather watching "hey i'm sitting at home and cos i'm not kiting i'm thinking about the weather for tomorw's kiting" ish.

a related thought. are there any good spots near ocean reef cos it seeems to have wind to kill for.

Hi Yabbie,

Not sure myself - I've had real consisent days at Leighton, and shocking gusty days as well? Usually depends on how well I've got my gear rigged!

Did you see the other weekend where Safety Bay had the breeze in at 11am, and it didn't kick in at other spots until hours later? .. crazy thing was it appeared to reverse a few days later - early at Ocean Reef, later at Safety bay - go figure!

Enjoy .. Laurie

p.s. Anybody checked out the new "wide mouth" yesterday graphs - full 24 hour charts

I will try and get an answer on the varied conditions for you guys soon. Other spots like scarborough have gusty days too.
I'm studying for a met exam next week, just don't have a better answer than: local land geography/ temperature conditions creating different local wind effects. i.e different surface types will heat at different rates to others. Land has a lower specific heat than water, meaning it takes less energy to heat it, meaning it also cools faster as well. Perhaps the river does have an effect, not a silly thought. Also look at the orographic surroundings. The city buildings, hills, etc. Air motion is similar to water. Hot water/air rises, cool water/air sinks, obstructions in the path of air/water will create turbulence etc. I hope this train of thought helps. Like I said, I don't fully understand myself. But will ask someone who does have a better idea and get back to it.
Happy kiting

oh, forgot to add. The example of comparing water to air is that it is to add a better visual of what is roughly going on.
A seabreeze is created by the differential heating rates of land and sea under conditions of strong incoming solar radiation (ocean temperature only changes by about 1 degree celcius between day time and night time, high specific heat). The warmer air above the land expands and rises, thus there becomes a pressure differential between land and sea. The cooler air over the sea moves in to replace the rising air over the land.
Now, if we take Leighton beach and your theory of the river interferring we can see that the air over the river will not be heated as much as the air over land either side of the river. This surely would have to affect the type of sea breeze we are going to get? This is only a theory... like I said, I will try and get back to you with a better explanation.
Cheers

thanks. look forward to it. maybe its just where the BoM's instrument is? sometimes it seems pretty steady down there but the graphs still show 10 knots diff. yesterday tho the gusts felt like the 10 knots difference.
