i must admit i have never had a lesson, but i think i am a bit dull.
You need to know the safety stuff. It is most important not only for your safety but for the safety of the rest of us around you and the innocent bystanders, plus as well the instructor can give you loads of tips on the best gear to suit you.
Even if you have just one lesson to teach you that, and a mate to guide you for the first few weeks you'll be right.
Also it might not be the best idea to dive straight into the ocean take your time. Know your limitations is probably the best advice anyone can give you
good luck have fun
