Hi I managed to part company with a new North red dragon 135 twin tip board. Last seen approx 5.00 pm on Sunday 14th November approx 400 metres off Peli point. Could be washed up on the shoreline or still floating.
I checked the shoreline this morning couldnt see it.
I am offering $100 reward for its safe capture.
I know youre supposed to be able to body drag to pick it up. Had a 14 kite up and had no hope of getting upwind .
WHAT am I doing wrong.
PLease help or this could turn into a regular colomn.
Next board and installment next week!I HOPE NOT

I haven’t found your board, but I do have some tips for dragging back to the board.

A)Depower your kite on the strap if you are maxed out.
B)Really extend your body out and get that hand deep in the water, you have got to act like a keel on a boat to get the resistance to drag back upwind.
C)To go upwind even more dip your whole head and body under the water, you will be surprised at how much difference this makes.
D)Be real careful when changing direction bring the kite across the top of the window real slow so you don’t get plucked down wind and lose all that ground.
E)If you have lost sight of your board count while you drag in each direction. For example drag right and count to 20, turn around drag left until you count to 20 this will put you back roughly in line with your board.
F)If your board is strap down it will drift down wind slower.
G)As soon as you stack it get that front hand in the water

Hope that helps…

Thanks Shane for your advice.
I should have plenty of opportunity to try it out as I havnt got a board anymore. Maybe if I get good eneogh I wont need a board.
If ANYONE IS PASSED by a guy body dragging in the future that is probably me.

Hi Deso. Sorry to hear about your board. Have nearly lost mine twice :-(
A surfer found mine last time.
I am writing to pass on a really simple and obvious idea I saw only yesterday. A guy had written his name and phone number on his board! I thought jeez, why hadn't I thought of that!
Goodluck and I hope it turns up.

Hey Deso,

you might wanna try a leash until you have that up-wind body drag thang nailed...

you could I guess use one if you had a board!

If you get your board back - go for a Reel Leash!

Cheers

Speaking of reel leashes - I have never used one but I am interested in trying it out. Do you still need to use a helmet with a reel leash?

Reel leashes cost around $100 and come into their own in waves or heavy swell.

I've had no boards firing back at me since I started using one.

I still use a helmet - but that is primarily to keep my Sea Specs from getting ripped off my head (a la Bolgo) when I stack it

Hi Andris,
Notice you use Sea Specs. How do you find them ,as I am just about to order a few pairs for my instructors.

Top Tips

Body dragging upwind to your board is easy when you have power.

My tip is when you have to do it take your first tack towards the sun then when you come back on your return tack you are looking down sun to see your board.

We have some great board specials at the moment and are having a demo day on Sunday so if you are unfortunate enough not to find your board I will do my best to help you out.

Also down at the Narrows Bridge is where the jet ski's and waterskiing go out. Often that is where the boards end up. A notice on the board down there might bring you some success in getting it back.

Good luck!!!

I use a reel leash and like Andris I haven't had a board come back and hit me. Plus I haven't lost a board yet!

However, the leash has wrapped around my legs a couple of times when I've crashed in jumps which isn't ideal.

I wear a helmet and I wouldn't stop wearing one just because I ride with a reel leash.

I guess it comes down to personal preference and what you feel comfortable with. I'm quite capable of body dragging upwind, but having a reel leash means it's very unlikely that I'll ever lose a board and it's nice to have it just float back to my side when I come off.

But it does increase the risk of something else happening such as being hit by the board or getting the leash wrapped around you.

I'm sure people have got horror stories of accidents with reel leashes though!

Sea Specs are the business - no more sore eyes in the salt spray.

But don't order more than three pairs at once or you'll get slugged for customs as they think ur running a business.
