the melville thread was interesting stuff

got to say equal mayhem at peli point, always seems to be a kite in the trees when i get down there

luckily no road or wires houses etc

but there are walkers cyclists, families swimming, kite bitches on the beach sunning the eye candy

same issues stupid launching/landing practices especially 12 oclock kite parking in the gustiest area - launch land zone
then idiots ride in and out of that zone, look at me types seldom with more than rudimentary skills, trying tricks in an area with no room for error

and who said south of the river is better?

Are you referring to the dangers of standing around with the kite at 12 in the landing area picking your bum and generally being a dangerous obstacle or am i missing something

just making the comment that the melville guys are not orphans with their problems
the same issues at peli point last year (& including the bird sanctuary)created a similar thread response
same practices continue this year a la kites in the trees, new kiters, new year, same problems
only need one joe public injury and its a goner

there was at one stage a peli point users group to be formed, not sure what happened to that

Are these people who always end up with kites in trees and not knowing how to launch properl;y etc... are these the people that havn't had lessons??? coz surely if you've had adequate lessons this sort of thing wouldnt be so frequent?
it should be compulsory to get a certain amount of lessons to obtain a "kitesurfing ticket" or something similar that grants you the right to kitesurf wherever... might prevent accidents.
probably a stupid idea but just thinking (and i realise would be impossible to police)

Good in theory, but...

Yesterday I was at Peli about to head out when I saw a guy with an inflatable obviously setting up for self-launch on the beach. I offered him a launch to which he replied "no thanks its all good". I checked again to make sure, and he again denied help. Seconds later...kite rolling along the beach into the bushes. Lucky I was close enough to grab it quickly before it got too far. This guy even had his lines crossed (which I hadn't noticed, guess he didn't either).

Not wanting to cast dispersions, but this guy didn't appear to be a local, so he wouldn't have had a "ticket" anyhow. He did know what he was doing out there because I kept an eye out for interests sake. I guess its a case of not wanting to ask for help, but as for refusing when offered??

I was also approached by a group of 3 birdwatchers on Wed arvo after finishing up my session. We had a fairly lengthy discussion where they explained that the kites look like birds of prey to the other birds nesting there. I explained that we do try to avoid the area as a general rule and only go close to the beach by accident. Unfortunately at that precise moment someone came screaming in about 10m off the beach, popped up into a backflip transistion and screamed out again (impressive move btw...just poorly timed).

I'm working on the brochure / handout for Peli Point...including points made in previous threads etc...so if anyone else has feedback or comments, out with them.

Phew - long post.

I was just down there after work today to have a look and the first thing i see was 2 kiters almost collide going in opposite directions, it was blatantly one persons fault but i couldnt help but laugh....
could have been dangerous?

Adam

Post your email address and I will send you a copy (electronic) of the cottesloe brochure, I produced this in conjunction with WAKSA when the cott thing was boiling. Then we can put them on the WAKSA website for all to seee download etc

We should try keep these info brochures to a standard and you can make the changes to it to be specific to peli point - save time - produce it quicker - and avoid reinventing the wheel. Hope this can help

lucky bay people should consider doing a simmilar thing

enjoy and stay safe

another one (at least) yesterday foil, foil day before wrapped around the big sheoak

those things scare the **** out of me , down wind hot launches, esp at p point no margin for error at all, most launching them dont seem to have a fricken clue either

anyway neil at hold the line must be happy

similarly quite strong breeze yesterday, a newbie pumps up his kite and then walks half way down beach to self launch, i had to leave before the consequences were apparent

perhaps a sign laying down some "basic local principles" including the bird sanctuary, thou must say havent seen any one on that beach this summer (kiters taht is) bird watchers are like religious zealots, but they are just as bad seen them trampling thru the reeds and rushes, at least (most of )the kites stay in the air

theres been a lot of work put in as a result of last seasons peli meeting... most of which is only just coming to fruition.

afaik, there are signs and a brochure underway for peli, the problems lie in being allowed to physically place things down there.

the best thing is for the regulars to keep pounding away and letting the people landing over the footpath and crowding the landing/launch area know that they are doing the wrong thing... unfortunately this usually falls on deaf ears.

bolgo, get in touch with [email protected] and see if you can help out at peli?

adam, you might want to do the same?

Hey guys - i have 2 questions, sorta relevant to the post so far:

1) How the fark do people know what a bird thinks a kite looks like??
Did they strap a budgie into a sensory helmet and fly kites over his head to monitor the reactions? Birds of prey do not look like kites - unless you're talking about the star trek kind - and then kites do kinda look like birds of prey from the side..

2) And more seriously: If at peli point you are heading out to the middle of the river (planing on ur board - not walking) and you want to turn and come back in - what do you do if there is a guy behind you caining along in your wake? If you turn, its very likely that the kites will come into contact. Can someone please clear this one up for me ?

Do you keep going till he turns first? or
Turn as he shouldnt be so close? or
what ?

And finally - if you see someone who looks like they are just standing in the water with the kite above their head - what ever you do - go behind them. It seems like common sense now:

At the time i thought my kite - low in the sky - would cross this persons lines if i went behind him - so i went quite a far way down in front (<20m though ). I think he waited for me to be right down wind of him to then dive his kite at me as fast as he could - possibly by accidient - but i reckon he had it in for people that could edge.

Now i know i shoulda bought my kite up to 12 o'clock and edge hard behind him - stopping if necessary. lucky theres a next time.

Anyways if someone could answer 2) for me i'd be grateful.

Ta.

my understanding is calm did some survey awhile back and the birds dont seem to be bothered by the kites

ian at peli point a full bottle on this

point is the bird watchers (avian zealots with no sense of fun nor humour) are the trouble makers and kiters the possible losers

however in fairness this summer most have been sensible and there is no longer a trail of people walking past the fence and rigging up

right of way on the water has been covered in other posts with animated discussion

Bear off downwind ... when you are clear THEN make your turn (and keep your kite low)

Robbo,
Jan's is a good way of doing it when you have enough room to do so. Another trick I use is to keep looking over my shoulder at the other rider to get their attention and then signal to them by holding up my index finger and twirling it. This sounds bizarre written down and might not conjure the right image but so far everyone seems to realise this physical signal means I want to turn and they usually turn first to give me room to do so. If the person is repeatedly boxing me in or riding on my tail the looks over my shoulder to get their attention are dirty looks.
Hope this makes sense.

The people who conducted the survey on the migratory birds to peli point have actually been very considerate of us kiters, we should consider ourselves lucky that we can kite there at all. The birds actually travel 9000km to get there. You can find more info on migratory birds at peli point in this thread www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2916&SearchTerms=migratory
