Am familiar with the area.
Sandon river- the only town in nsw with no road to it. Either swim the river from Brooms Head end or drive up the beach from Diggers. A block of privately owned houses (no services). Camp grounds on north side
Diggers camp- Conjecture whether it was named after WW1 diggers or sand miners. A block of privately owned houses (no services)
Minnie water- More developed with modern houses, a camp ground and shop.
Wooli- A small town with pub etc. River has break walls.
The whole area is excellent for fishing, crabbing, surfing. If you're not camping, best to rent a house. They are cheap off season. Summer would be best with consistent northerly winds, though SE could work in some places as well. Careful of shoreline rocks around the headlands. Hope this helps

No have not kited there. Lotsa other good spots between me and there . My dad was involved in sand mining in the area many years ago. Good lobster, spearing, fishing, surfing area. The right hander off diggers you mentioned doesn't really happen; but backside (sth side of headland)there is a GREAT surf spot. You can access all the area if you stay in wooli. The old beachfront houses there, are great to rent with river at back. However, diggers and sandon (where I like to stay) are a step back in time, and a really special place to stay with the old shacks. The few houses are mostly residents, but I think you can holiday rent the odd one through the local estate agents. Some people avoid diggers as it is said to be haunted. As I eluded to before it may have been named after WW1 soldiers. The rumour is, they pulled one guy from every platoon and tested wartime chemicals on them. True or not, its a bit spooky there.

Ahh yes "Wooli" home of the annual "Goanna Pulling" contest held on the long weekend just gone and it's a little quiet getaway. I'm not gunna say anything more but rugged and be prepared for anything, long stretch of coast without certain access, alot of logging roads that lead to nowhere. There's a big lake around there, never tried it kiting, but hey that's the adventure.

Hey lotofwind,
I've attempted to kite the lake at Yamba. Wish I hadn't.

It was a few years back when learning. It looked like a safe spot to learn. But there are trees all around, the lakes not that big and the wind is gusty. Drops out totally in spots. Once the kite dropped, I had a lot of difficulty relaunching it. Got dragged downwind through heaps of jellyfish. Then had to walk back through waist deep water and knee deep mud.

If you are up to the ocean, most of the guys go out at Pipi beach.

You could kite the western end, there are some open area's to set up but it's all private land. I grew up on a farm that backed onto Lake Wooloweyha. Mud! Mud like you note believe! It's that deep and sticky that it's dangerous and would get all over your gear. I would not recommend it unless you have a boat, and then there are some sandy beaches on the southern side Rainbow bay and Rocky Point beach.
You can kite in the river at Sandon need's the right winds and is still gusty. Whiting beach at Yamba which is near Turners beach but in the river mouth is ok to get some flat water but you need the right winds and tides or it get's dodgy (Northly).
Pipie beach is the pick of the spots. Good surf! The guy's have been kiteing Shark bay lately it's over on the Iluka Rd, it's got it all some flat water in the south corner and nice rolling waves out the back to go big on.

Hope that helps. The Clarence Valley is one of the nicest places in Oz! Good fishing, diving and kiting!!!!!!!

Cheers G.

Thanx gerard,
i kited shark bay at iluka a few months back and saw how it got its name.
i was just about to dive the kite for first run and a 4 foot shark swam past about 6 foot away
kited anyway, had a ball but a bit dawnting being the only person in the water with no one on the beach or in sight anywhere.quite isolated.
would love to kite it again,it looks like it needs a SE wind,if only south no good.is that right?

Pretty much offshore everyhere unless you drive to Iluka wall and check the river beaches on the southern side of the wall beside the coastguard tower. It's one of the bigggest volume rivers in australia, so don't drop your kite on a runout tide. Check the waves there and frasers for a paddle surf. Probably a better option. I own a waterside holiday house there (Iluka) but I think its full at moment

Hmmm. Sharks in Shark bay? Ha! They used to get pretty think just after Christmas, chasing the Mackerel. You can kite the North end of Shark Bay (Black Rock) but you need a 4WD, it is ok in a true southly. But like you said often no one around. SW'ly hey, that sucks it's the only wind which doesn't offer much. We kited at Sandon River last Christmas in a SW it was ok, gusty and you need low tide so you can set up on the sand flats. If the wind is strong and true you can find some spots in the river at Yamba around Cristal Waters. But be warned it isn’t for any learners for the tide can take you places you don't want to go!!! One of the guy's there last year got in trouble ended up in one of the canals got his kite stuck on a wharf, the owner came out with a knife and cut the **** out of his Kite and lines! If you got a boat ya sweet there is heaps!!! You can hire them from the BP pretty cheap, if you do talk to Rod and tell him Grant say's hi!
