what i would like to know is should i be looking for a 12m or 14m kite . i went out today on my brother 04 12m cabrrinha acess and had a lot a trouble getting up.(i am 92kg ) i do not know if i could have rigged it a differently to get more power . i had the rear line on the second knot but they where very loose and the kite was not that responsive .should i be looking for a 14m and can i rig the 12m differently to get more power.i have had 3 leasons and do a lot of wakeboarding so want something that i can progress with .
thank any help be great .

I'd go for the 14m for sure, you'll get a better wind range with it for your body weight. When rigging the kite, it will fly the best when you put it at 12 o'clock & all four line are nice and even (tight). You should spend time to get to know your kite. See how it reacts & feels when differently rigged in the same wind speed. So if you have someone with you launch it and see how it feels then bring it down and make some adjustments then try it again, keep doing this until you find what works the best for you. When you have really loose back lines it means the kite will not react as fast & will turn a bit slower & have less power.(if your flying it like this you need a smaller kite for that wind speed) If the back lines are too tight the kite will be over powered (flared wingtips) and will not fly as good. It sits further back in the wind window & means its harder to edge upwind.(if you have it set like this it means you need a bigger kite for that wind speed). So spending a few minutes tuning it makes all the difference. Hope that helps you a bit.

Hey Jags,

Stick with the 12m, I used nothing bigger than a 12m all of last year and havent needed anything bigger recently especially in the last few weeks where I have been lit on a 9.

If you are having problems working out if your kite is rigged right, I would suggest a lesson with a qualified instructor who knows what he is doing.

If you have done three lessons, you should have been taught and practised :- kite relaunch from the water (leading edge down), self rescue, throwing the bar and engaging the safety system then relaunching from this scenario, site analysis, some basic meteorology and some tips on rigging and tuning your kite. You should also be body dragging upwind and being aware of your space and other users of the beach and the water.

If you are lacking any of these skills, I would recommend further instruction from someone qualified. You don't want to be learning to self rescue if the wind suddenly picks up and goes gusty and off shore....

Just a thought, but stick with the 12m and have someone who knows, rig it with you.

Jags,

Some info from someone heavier than you (100 + gst):
I have a 12m kite which was my beginner kite. If the winds are just in the green, then i can get along, but i do have to sine the kite to keep the speed up. If the winds drop below 17 kn I find it almost impossible to keep edging.

i can stand without being lifted off my feet with that 12m up till about 30kn, after which i just get dragged, and have to depower the kite - and then bring it in.

I reckon u'd be right with a 12 from about 16 - 26kn, of course that depends on how big ur board is, but u prolly will get a bigger board also - less u want to get real mad real quick cause you cant start planing.

In almost all conditions i rig all lines up to the middle knots, xcept for when its real windy and i rig the front to the middle knots and the back to the knots furtherest from the kite so i have a bit more depower ability.

This is just what works for me. i'm sure other will have their say

if ur learning stick with the 12 - its always cool to have a smaller kite for when it blows, and those lighter boys just sit on the beach and watch.

have fun choosing - it's always hard with such a big range.

robbo.

I would have thought a 14 would be OK for your weight ?? but all the above 12M advise is from the people who really know!
What I am sure about is that the Cabrinah Access is brilliant as learner kite. I learnt on one & its now for sale (WOW already !!! ).
03 12M Access bought new in Feb 04. Yours at half the new superceded cost - only $750. Complete all original bar lines & bag except you get a pump that actually pumps - SS steel shaft with gauge!
At about 70kgs this kite worked for me from day 1 at about 14>20 kts
with a bit of practice 13>24.
Call me anytime on 0400 227 296

PS - my 2c - go with a really big board for a while at least even if you are a wakeboarder - big boards arent so much about board skills they just keep you up longer & easier so you can get a grip on your kite skills - it'll sharpen the curve & make life a lot more fun in those early days.
