This will be the first reply of many mate.

It can be very, very bad. Like fractured skull bad. Like board embedded in other parts of your body bad.

These are the reasons leg ropes are very, very rare in kiting now days.

The masses are right. Go with them.

learn to body drag. It takes like 90seconds to get back to your board on average.

Also, search this forum for 'leg ropes', you'll soon get the picture.

Saw a guy this afternoon at the beach almost have his head clean cleaved off from a bungee leg rope after a kite crashed and relaunched in the shallows. He actually saw how close he came to losing his head. Nice sharp edges on an Underground FLX.

We suggested he remove the leggy and I noticed him half an hour later without it ... smart boy!

Lose the leggy, even a helmet and impac vest will not save your neck where your spine protrudes a little between the vest and helmet.

A half hour lesson in upwind body dragging will be cheaper than a motorized wheelchair.

Good winds,

don't use a legrope.

If your struggling to find your board or get upwind to it most people will help you out and get it/search for it.

about 3/4 years ago at Unlucky Bay I had to step back helplessly as a guy went into an uncontrolled drag down the streak of a beach Unlucky Bay is.

He had an old directional attached by a legrope and his board was flailing behind him like a sword with three extra blades (Fins)
I had a split second where I might of been able to grab hold of him
but decided to step back - seing the way his board was following him if I had missed him I would of surely been cut in half by his board.

I had to watch him go by and his kite went round one of those pepermint trees. He ended up hanging about three feet off the ground out of the tree still hooked in but luckily un-injured

It was one of those moments that in a split second you have already prepared yourself to whitness something very disturbing thats about to happen - he was soooo lucky maybe thats were the place gets its name...

no leggies

Leg ropes are bad for another reason. is that if you get lofted from a jump on the beach and your board is dragging behind you then you don't have a leg to stand on (if you'll excuse the pun)

If you must as sometimes I feel I must (ie. the tide is going out and the wind aint gonna help you pick up your board)
You can get away with a reel leash. 10m long and no boing!

you replace the board attachment with a ring on webbing attached between your fin bolts.

This post will get slammed no doubt but it's the safest (non leg) rope I've seen so far and good for those 'you'll never get your board back' days.

If you must use a leash, the Reel Leash is the only option.

Connect it to the board with a piece of webbing, under one of the fin screws. Burn a hole in the webbing, just big enough to fit the body of the screw. If the connection is put under major stress,it will pull free.

Heres an idea:

Use a loop of fishing line with a safe breaking strain,say,5 kilos as the connection point. If loaded up it will break. Should work ?

I have bein using a dog leash that is very very good and cheaply to buy, the part that you would hang to with a dog i slip my foot in it and works very good, only trouble is when sliding up beach ,the board travels not too far behind. Go ahead it is worth it.

What you need a lease for Rich Rello, doesn't your board come back when you whistle for it??

I did what user suggested and it did rip through the webbing but then whipped back at me and the last bit that didn't reel in flicked round my body and nearly took my manhood out, missed by that much, scored 4 stitches in my groin. Anyway as you might expect I didn't use the webbing method again and used the proper bungey you get with the leash which is the way to go if you are going to use the reel leash. Also you could/should take off the heavy steel shackle that comes standard on reel leashes and replace it with a placky clip. Or then again do what I now do and don't use a leash unless your relaunching just so the baord doesn't drift away. I've started body dragging this season and was surprised how easy and quick it is.

if really keen on leashes, you can use those really little zip ties to connect the leash to the board. and if you only put it on lightly it comes off even easier

look, everyone used a leash until they got bashed or cut by their board a few times in the old days. be a man /woman and use the ignorance we had a couple of years ago to advantage to create a unique scar like many of us to advantage in pub betting comps.
yeooooow.

ive got a little metal ring that is between a fin and its screw, that it hooks to. but you can hook it to the carry handle aswell

If you must have a leash, get a small metal ring attached to your harness and through that ring have 4 or so small zip ties. This is where you attach your board leash to one of them. In a big stack where the board dives under the water and loads up the tie will break. Any other small stacks the board will be right there with you no problems!!!

Use this method for ease of learning then after awhile when you are going up wind and more confident loose the leash!!!!

it all to easy!!!!
