am I correct in saying if you have to sine the kite you are underpowered? this might seem obvious but how can you tell if your overpowered?

does being overpowered significantly hamper you from staying upwind?

im 67kgs and was on a 10m C02 today and the closest wind station said 23-28kts. most of the afternoon i had the bar out as far as it could do and a number of times i was going to fast i started to **** myself ! i was constantly being pulled downwind too.

15seconds of downwind riding = 10min of draging the kite backupwind was hardwork

Overpowered makes going upwind really easy if you can hold your edge and keep your speed down. If.

Did you have your 'depower strap' fully pulled in?

You can usually work yourself back into a position where you can get the bar to sit in the middle of the line. This way you can still sheet out. Of course you will still get the occasional 'OH Sh.t moment but it's better to over power for a second and drag that bar towards you rather than let it fully out and have nowhere to go...especially when beginning, not that I'm much better than a beginner which is why these things are VERY fresh in my mind.

Sit the kite low will let you edge harder, but if you chicken out and point it to the sky, you are likely to go skyward with it, so small moves on the bar

Used to be like that, worried when overpowered trying stupid moves like arm drags and butt drags. Now I just look forward to the big gusts cause that is when you launch your jump. You will boost high but come down with only a small amount of speed so then you can re-set your edge and go back up wind. If the wind is really strong you will have no problem gaining back the distance you went downwind in the jump and you will be back in control of your speed plus the great feeling of just launching big

I don't land all my jumps, not even close to it but it is much more fun then getting pulled off your edge.

If you really need a bit more edge, lift up with your front foot while pushing down and out with the back leg. Will carve the rear of the board in deeper and point you more up wind. If you are all ready on edge, DON'T just lean back more as that can take less weight off the board and make it more likely for you to skip out when in chop.

Better to jump and float then wipeout at speed and look like a prat
