Have a look at previous comments on the forum.
There's a huge long man made projection next to the port going out to sea. Essentially you can sail in any wind direction from this. Don't plan on a long swim in as the local sharks have a bad reputation.

Around Pt H a long swim is somewhere over 2 minutes, then HL can look forward to being Hung Drawn and Quartered

I've never been called an "expert" before... sounds funny, I'd prefer experienced...

Gasman, I've got a picture in my mind, the sea full of sharks just swimming around waiting for a sniff of human to jump in the water...

Please tell me it's not that bad !...

or is there anywhere else thats kiter friendly...

do you know any kiters up there

Hey Brownee,

Don't know about Pt Headland, but we were warned against swimming in Dampier Harbour last time we were there due to the large Tigers and crazed bull sharks that frequent the area.

I think Gasman might be right, no crashes and learn to walk on water if you do. Dampier and Pt Headland aren't very far apart as the fish swims!

Good luck and have fun

Think I may take the buggy or mountain board and the foil instead...

I grew up there and we spent heaps of time in the water. (used to tip my Hobbie cat over regulary) and just general swimming. The long sand bar is the spoils bank created by the dredging of the channel, and when I was there.... late 70s early 80s.. it was not connected to the mainland but I believe it now is? ( I haven't been there in 15 years) The tide movement is massive (7m) on spring tides (new and full moon) As I recall there is an area that dries out up at "Pretty pool" near cook point caravan park that would be great on an outgoing tide (sand bottom up there)and shallow enough to keep the sharks (big ones) away but deep enough to kite.. Just gotta walk home from the low tide mark!!! (only about a k or 2)During neap tides the it would still be good. I've known people to kite up there and even learn to kite... body drag etc.. I'd be more worried about the bottom than the sharks.. Oh and stingrays too!!! Don't walk on the sand , shuffle!

Hey Brownee,

I cant believe no one has mentioned the Homicidal chainsaw weilding maniacs that run up and down the beach spitting blood and revving the chainsaws or the kiter eating pirhana that squirt hydrochloric acid from their eyes onto your testicles.

Luckily the anti personnel mines along the beach take care of at least some of the cannabalistic head hunters with the poison darts.

All this of course is presupposing that you aren't killed by the falling grand pianos and the anvils dropping from the sky onto the rigging area.

Feel better about the sharks now???

Have a great sesh

I lived up there for a year in 2003 and kited many times at the spoil bank. Its a pretty good spot and at this time of the year is pretty consistant with 20-25kn easterlies in the morning.

Easterlies are pretty safe if you kite on the inside of the bank.

There was one other kiter living up there but I am not sure if he is still there.

I wouldnt recommend walking around in the shallows without a pair of booties on (stone fish). Just drag yourself into and out of the water..............and watch out for the yellow and black banded sea snakes.

On the upside, the water is warm and you won't need your wettie
