well hopely i'm learning kite at the moment in Perth .
but, in this time, i was told that the winds are not as good as in summer. then it makes hard to pick a good day to practise.

just wondering when is it coming good season again...??
need a gooood desent wind but always too strong or nothing..

and how long does it take usually to learn and become self-sufficient rider?

I started late last year and stopped cos of the cold and lack of wind or too much at times. I think the best time would be about Oct. This allows for time to practice all through summer.

Cheers

Season starts cranking back into gear October-November. Your correct winter is a crap time to learn because wind is unpredicatble and inconsistent and quite often gusty. Seabreezes offer a good opportunity to learn in lighter conditions, especially at the start of the season and the wind is a LOT more stable and your prety safe to assume its not going to be squally. Good wind to first practice is about 13knots, then about 14-16 mark... make sure you learn in a safe spot.

Time to learn varies a lot depending on how commited you are, natural ability, how often you can get out. I've seen a couple of people 18-19 even early 20's pick it up reasonably self sufficent by their 3rd time but mind you probably averages more about a month to become properly self sufficient.

Hope that helps, make sure you have someone teach you wether it be a mate who is a pretty decent kiter or through an instructor. DVD's also help a bit...

Well with the most extremely windiest month coming up, what better time is there to learn a wind sport.

Buy a kite and get out there.

Take your pick from this lot.

Beware the bities (crocs) up north (Cairns/Cooktown) if you're going to be doing a lot of bodydragging, etc. I don't s'pose it can be much worse than dragging around like a human lure off perth beaches with the Great Whites. Have'nt heard of any kiters being et yet.
