i just picked up an 07 rebel and am curious about the 5th la straight line across the kite as i have tuned the bar to have all 5 lines the same length, but the 5th pigtale is about 10cm shorter than the other pigtales. when i hook up lines the 5th is tight and the fronts are loose. i made a extention for it and now have all lines under same tension but am unsure as if this is correct.i have never owned a 5 line before and the wind around here has not let me test this yet??

I have a rebel and i keep all my lines the same length, when flying the kite my fifth line is usually loose. Try going to www.northkites.com and then go into the video section, they have a vid on how to tune your kite properly... i have even heard that if you extend the fifth line by an extra few centimeters the kite jumps way better. Also have a look at this web site, it has steps to tuning your kite www.southcentralkiteboarders.com/rebeltune.html

I have 9m & 12m 07 kites, standard setting is having the lines the same length when the bar is back against the micro hook and the depower cleat on max power (ie all the way out not in).

This is how I fly my 12m but on the 9m I shorten the steering lines by one knot so they are about 4cm shorter. Also I pump the LE up real hard.

that is what i have been told. when u pump ur kite up and lay it on the ground, is the 5th line bridle shorter than the front pigtales as im not sure if mine has the wrong length

What size kite do you have? If it's a 9 or 12 measure the lengths and I will confirm against mine.

i have a 9. the v length is just under 130cms and the y is 61 cms. but when rigged up on the ground, if i get someone to hold the kite still and i pull the chicken loop taught. the fifth is tight and the fronts still have some slack

Willis, how ya goin.......mine is a 10m and buy rule of thumb your SAFETY 5th line should be a little slack when lines are taught...sheeted in).....with the micro loop seated just behind the bar....that enables normal movement between fully sheeted out and fully sheeted in,when the vario cleat is adjusted to allow full power....remember to always clip your leash to the micro loop,Roo

Willis, you should not need any'extension' unless the kite has been tampered with by the previous owner.....North have the setup prety 'downpat' to start with....don't play around with an 'out of the norn' setup.. you will only open a 'can of worms' and stuff up the geometry and ballance of the kite.....you should be able to achieve the desired length of 5th line length to drive and steering lines by useing the colour coded knots, there is a colour code down the grey line that enters the vario cleat teeth....be sure to match the colours on it in relation to the colour coded knots on the outside lines at the bar....I know it seems complicated but if you take the time to set up in your yard....I use nails on the top rail of the back fence, about the same distance apart as if they were connected to the kite pigtails, all the same length, you can then hook yourself in and lean back and study and observe the way everything is set up,vario adjusment to....best to star with full depower set to start with........Poor Relative is good with North setups, .....he might see your post and add some better explanation,Roo

ive used the nail on the fence technique to get all line lengths the same. only thing i can think of, does the kite flatten out in the air more than how it sits at rest on the ground? if the wingtips flare out even a couple of inches each side then that would loosen the fifth a little (i think) and all would be good again

Willis,

I tried these changes with my kite because I wasn't happy with it.
www.southcentralkiteboarders.com/rebeltune.html

It did fly better but I have since reverted back to standard setting with the exception of pumping the LE really hard and having the steering lines(back lines)
3-4cm shorter.

ive checked that out. i leave it set up the same as yours and give it a go.it obviously works for u. for ur 12, do u set all the lines the same off a nail or screwdriver and just shorten steering lines for the 9

I keep the 12m lines all the same and it has always flown beautifully.

I too bought my 9m 2nd hand and I didn't like it at all.
But after trying a few different settings I now love this kite too.

Let us know how you get on.

Cheers
