Can you kitesurf around the islands off brisbane - like russell island and moreton bay area? Or do you get eaten? Anyone ride these areas?

hi stnkster,
moreton bay is a wonderland of kiting spots, but a lot of the islands require a boat to access them. south straddie has jumpinpin, north straddie has the fabulous "kite island"which is always drenched in glorious sunshine, and moreton beaches are a plenty.
but it is a big 'archipeligo'(i've always wanted to use that word) so research away.
p.s.russell island is a bit mangrovey.

ta for the info...I was just reading a little about peel island and this is the first thing I found...

"Surrounded by shark-infested waters, Peel Island in Brisbane’s Moreton Bay was considered the perfect location for a 19th century quarantine station. In the early 20th century it became a home to those with leprosy."

Sharks and leprosy! The perfect combination!

Looks good for kiting though....

i wouldnt worry too much about the sharks, I believe its mostly nurse sharks around there anyway so no probs. back in those days they probably just assumed they were man eaters.

i believe you can also kite the bay side of coochie mudlo, but dont have much info on that. Ive ridden off point haloran a few times, and you can ride across from the point to the mainlaind side of the island, just watch out for the metal pole that marks the channel. (mind, its advanced only there, dodgey launch and *lots* of sharp shells in the shallows, so wear booties)

Hey Greenleader,

I am curious about "Kite Island". Is it a virtual island that is only visible at low tide or does it really exist (always).

I have looked in Beacon to Beacon and I could not find "Kite Island".

I've just scooped a boat and would like to get to this paradise that you mention....

IANC Look for Goat Island. In between North Straddie and Peel Island. Just a small sand island with a couple of spindly little mangrove trees. Have kited there several times.

The sharks in Moreton bay used to be a problem when the whaling station was situated at Tangalooma. Great Whites galor due to the processing plant. Big buggers too. I remember a couple of guys ending up in the water in the late 70's after their boat foundered. They were taking it in turns to sit in a large fish cooler that they were using for support. A great white ate the bloke who was in the water at the time.

A good spot on North Straddie is Blakesleys Landing in a Northerly.

The bay Islands are seperated by fairly narrow channels and the height of the islands (Russell, Lamb, Macleay etc) interferes with the wind a lot. Plenty of wind shadows. The water is pretty murky as well. Best to stay on the western side of North Straddie or Peel. Nice clean clear water.

Peel island was a leper colony for a while. I was playing cards there a while ago with a couple of blokes. One threw his hand in and the other laughed his head off.

A friend of mine with a cruising bay boat said he and his family went snorkelling at goat island and were surprised to see that every third small lump of brown coral in waist deep water was a stonefish.
Wear your wetsuit booties or doc martins.

guys, do you know any good fugu chefs?
who are willing to retrain from toadfish to stonefish chefs.
we could make a mozza with the tourist trade.
and provide deadly poison to those who need it!

Gees guys,

Islands off Brizzie sound so appealing. What with Man eating Great whites in shark infested waters, sharp shells, stone fish, metal poles, lepers, murky water, spindly mangrove trees, dodgey launches and only available through boat access.

If these are good spots .......

Good winds all!
