hey,
i got smashed the other day trying to self land my sonic. i currently have an o **** thingy set up on one of the front lined but evidently this didnt work too well....i think the problem may be the front lines twisting around each other....

can any one give me any tips as to how to land my sonic safley?

thanks

Howdy

Self landing never entirely safe, however sonic recommends on last years models to use suicide connection to loop rather than re-ride as you describe. I must say I have lost the kite when my air rush leash failed this way, so I have swapped back to the sonic leash.

My method (works better than my self launch) is pretty much as the video on their site showed, ease the kite to the edge of the wind window beside the sand, ease the bar out and let it go. It is supposed to balance just downwind a little and usually bounces once or twice. Walking up the front lines works from there, with the kite if it does move, flipping so the lei is down and floating 50 cm above the ground.

Self launching and landing sonics is the easiest thing in the world in anything over 12knots as long as you have a little bit of room and a fixed object to tie to. Just get a loop of 5mm (or bigger) and a carabiner. Tie it to a fixed object (post, bench, car, burried sandbag, tree) attach the chicken loop to the biner (check you have the stopper ball disengaged and pick up the kite like you were launching for someone else. Now walk it to the edge of the window and put tension on the lines. Find the spot where it balances on a wing tip and walk back, hook in and go kiting. To land, approach your biner, bring the kite to the edge of the window and let go of the bar slowly. Kite will sit there. Hook into the biner and go get your kite.

thanks for your replies guys,

crowling i dont understand what you mean.

"ease the kite to the edge of the wind window beside the sand, ease the bar out and let it go. It is supposed to balance just downwind a little and usually bounces once or twice. Walking up the front lines works from there, with the kite if it does move, flipping so the lei is down and floating 50 cm above the ground."

so you sit the kite at the edge of the window then crash it so the LE is down on the ground, then yank the top flying line to spin the kite into the wind so it is sitting on the ground luffing. then walk the front lines and grab the kite?

if this it right what happens if the kite moves and powers up?

Have to say I often do not land near where I take off and rarely have anything to anchor to, but will give it a try cos it sounds simple.

Basically once the kite is down and bar eased, just walk up the front lines (hand over hand, grip with a pinch so you cannot lose a fingertip). If kite moves (can due to wind/turbulence/lack concentration/cussedness/only holding one string, it will flip on its back and float upside down (well my 11 does, the 8 doesn't seem to budge).

Now that looks like a good idea! Do you use one?

I carry 3 foot loop of 4mm cord with a stainless biner in the pocket of my harness/shorts. Means I can land anywhere ther is a fixed object and weighs nothing

yes ..have used the rapid anchor solid sucker, don't bother with it anymore got used to launching letting the wind catch a tip.. freaky in the beginning as the kite runs down wind a bit was out on my own last night gusting to 24kn launched fine landed ..let the bar go and grabbed the top front line no drama if it all goes sideways leash out to safety happens alot with the venom good practice no panic .. the venom is launched 30 degrees from down wind so got used to it.. changed the bar on the sonic to a cross bow bar with out the pullys and leash to the front line long cl line goes to about 90% depower, is it just me can't stop tinkering with me bits..

practice in light wind and be prepared for it to go wrong it's half the fun
