nob,
I did this to my Rhino 1 and flew it for the first time on the Weekend. OMG was it the best thing I could have done.
I used a Y because it distributes the load on the LEI and positioned it halfway between the centre and struts on either side. All up with this professionally done, it cost me $30.00.
I then connected a bungey to the 5th line and the kite was the most stable Rhino I'd ever seen. This is NOT to mention how easy it is to launch.
With a Y you can also use it in two different ways.
One to relaunch the kite as per traditional 5th line or connect to the one side point to launch the kite to one side only.
5th Line Safety/Relaunch System
The 5th line is a very simple and efficent safety/relaunch system. It basically consists of a line which runs from the attachment points on the leading edge of the kite, through a ring on the sheeting strap and attaches to a grab ring. The rider has the option of attaching a safety leash line to the ring, which can save your kite if you drop your bar during unhooked moves like handle passes. This system can also be used with a pulley bar and solves the problem of difficult relaunches. When the bar is released, it slides up to a stopper ring approximately 8 feet up the line. Then you simply pull in the leash line until the bar is in your hand. Next, slowly release the leash line while putting pressure on one back line. The kite instantly moves to the edge of the window in the launch position.
This system offers 3 attachment options. The kites come with 3 attachment points, one in the center and two more off to the sides. The center attachment doubles as a pump leash. You can attach the 5th line to the center point, which allows you to launch the kite in either direction. You can use one of the offset attachment points if you want the kite to always launch in one direction (for example if you want it to always launch towards the water). The third option is to use a Y-line and attach to the two side attachments. This is recommended when you ride in big wave conditions. If a wave hits your kite while its down in the water, the 5th line will allow the wave to flow over the kite without damaging it. By using the dual attachment points, the pressure is distibuted across the leading edge instead of one point. The attachments are heavily reinforced to prevent failures.
