hi folks,

i kitesurf and i'm looking to try snowkiting when i'm in new zealand this winter. i was wondering how similar it is to kiting and if i can use my kitesurfing kite for snowkiting without too many probs.

anyway would happy to here any advice/comments on snowkiting from anyone with experience in this sport.

cheers!

We have a snowkiting forum over here:

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=51

but no-one really uses it much. There's a heap of info in this forum, do a search and you'll probably find something. I'm going in the first week of September to Queenstown and taking a kite - apparently the Snow Farm at Wanaka is a good destination.

Very similar. While learning, you're better off taking out one size smaller than you would on water. Once you get the hang of it, you'll be using kites of similar size to what you would use on the water. You can use your standard water kites but the valves can get REALLY hard. Keep a thermos handy to keep them flexible. Wear a helmet.

Snowkiting is so much fun if you have powder.
You can use your water kites on snow as well, but everyone agrees that foils are in advantage on snow. no pumping, no lines connecting, no bladders that can pop on snow.
At least you can do the same things on snow as on water ;)

Have fun on whatever.. snow, water, foil or ram-air.

Yes powder is nice but rare in oz and usually gets blown away if it is windy and your left with cauliflower ice .Our springtime snow on the main range is delish the weather is nicer too and there is a good base and fewr rocks to smash into .
There is a kite that is good for both that i and others have used for both for years .Unfortunately no one knows about them or they are poo hooed by people who have some weird hatred of doonas ( and usually base their cynicism on their wealth of experience on them ....not))
