so your suggestion is to use the board as an anchor for his 4-line bow kite then? thanks a lot Captain Safety, you're doing wonders for our sport.

We were at Kurnell today, worst wind I have ever kited in, EVER! I started on my 14m, but soon becamed overpowered, then a HUUUGE gust came through according to one of the guys on the beach it was 30 - 35 knots, at that stage I was only just upwind of a rock groin and got dragged hardcore towards it, depowered, still getting dragged. Pulled the safety release, then had the friggn snap shackle attaching my safety leash to my flagging line clip onto the flipping powerline just before the chickenloop (what are the odds of that????!!!), then got pulled into the rock groin coz my kite crashed on the other side of it...

Honestly Neill,

Dont handle the lines when you're completely powered. Handling your lines in overpowered conditions takes alot of risky time.

Like this
1) Flag the kite and anchore it down.
2) Stay away from the lines, Bolt down and land it.
3) Only then its safe to stuff with the lines.

If you cant find an anchore on the beach.
Simply use your board.

Hey JimmyZ that sucks. Hopefully the kite is in good condition

does anybody know how to attatch a safety ring to the centre lines on a sb3...that way you can move your safety to it and release when you want to land in big winds...do you reckon it would work???

you don't attach a 4-line bowkite's front line flag to a board on the beach and expect it to stay there. you can do this on a 5 line C-kite like you showed in the video but to do it with a 4 line bow is extremely stupid. it will likely roll over and the board will come out of the sand, your kite will fly downwind tumbling (remember we're talking 30 knots here) into the nearest bystander/powerlines/highway etc. it is a stupid thing to do on a SB3.

surfsky - only do it on a front line flag system, doesn't the SB3 have one of these? definately not recommended on a rear line flag system, it will possibly tear the attachment point off the kite if the wind is that strong. you dont' have to handle the lines, that is why i specified that you must wind the front line ONLY around the bar as you walk towards the kite. it may lift up and try to roll a few times, but because you can provide substantially more resistance than a board in the sand, it will not go anywhere. it cannot power up and drag you if you are attached to it by only a front line.

Sorry Neill,
I didnt know.

It isn't possible to completely flag out a bow kite safely. Silly me I thought it was easier.

I'd hate to tell all the Cabrinha lovers I told you so, so wont.

This is why I bagged the crappa out of the Cab bar setup when that bloke got dragged at Bondi. Glad they sorted it out with the IDS.

Saw the new switchy IDS in the flesh on the weekend and fark it looks like a sweet kite. Hopefully I get to demo soon, but will hold onto my revs for another season as they are too new to sell already.

I have a Xbow3.
To self land in humping winds, I bang the “oh ****” bauble that limits the travel of your bar out so the bar can go all the way up the centre line. I park the kite in the edge of the window, let go of the bar and loop the chicken loop line around a pole/toe hitch/fence/tree etc and secure it by pushing the donkey dick between the line and the loop to secure it.
At that stage the kite is on its side in the corner of the window and I run and grab it.
I self launch in reverse when I am alone or there is sea weed etc on the beach which could tangle my lines.

the airush SLE's have a much much better system to flag the kite. As long as there are no tangles there are no hassles releasing the quick release in most conditions. You shouldnt have to assume someone will catch your kite in windy conditions. I think the new cabrinha's (IDS) might be closer to the money as far as safety is concerned. I was surprised to find out the flagging system on the SB3 was well below average, with such a popular allround kite.
