Is this a video camera? If yes than it's very easy to mke one.
Use 5 inch PVC sewage piping with screwed end caps.
Go the a glazier and ask to cut a round piece of 5 mm glass to fit inside the screw-on caps, cut the cap to creatre a round window (leave at least 10 mm frame to glue the glass) and use slilicone to glue the glass.
Make sure you use silicone grease on the cap's o-rings, to have good seal. And test the seals by sinking the enclosure without the camera inside.
the only back-draw of tghis set-up is that you have to start the cammera before you close the cap and you have one hour of recording. but who cares, I got good underwater footage with this set-up.
For reference see my other post regarding Helmet camera in which I am using a similar setup.
A "professional" underwater enclosure, will cost you an arm and a leg, whist this setup, all the parts and the glass should be around 70 - 80 bucks and around 2 hours of fiedling around.

cheers, yes a camcorder..

i may have a play around and see what i can make if nothing good comes up, i'm still interested in getting a proper one (not too keen on sinking a $2k camera), and i figured i would have to pay an arm and a leg.. but then again how much value can you put on some good footage?!

has anyone ever used one of those soft cases. if so whats the quality of the footage like and how does it compare to footage from a solid housing. and is it the same method for keeping water drops of the front.

Whilst I do prefer my case ( I know what I've been assembling and testing), the soft cases are pretty safe, for a limited time.
The soft plastic starts pretty soon to "age", after one season changes the transparency becoming "milky" and changes its "softness" becoming somehow brittle - time to get a new one!
The good quality ones have the front lens made of polycarbonate, with good optical quality, so the footage should be as good as with a bare camera.

cool, this is all very helpful, i checked out those epic cam ones, it would fit, bit bulky but would work. I'd like to have a case with access to the buttons, i guess those softcases would allow that?

Maybe i'll have to make my own somehow, any ideas on how the buttons normally work? The barrel and glass lense would be pretty straight forward.
