I don't think florida has much of the winds that you desire

Florida gets plenty of wind in the cyclone season. The rest of the time you can spend drinking cheap, nasty beer and watching porn with the other frat-house jerks. Sounds great. Chicks love that stuff, don't you girls?

Hey Undagekiter,

For kiting try North Carolina, not sure where their uni is but if it's near Cape Hatteras it's an excellent location for kiting, but unsure of their party life. Also look up Texas as they also have awesome winds and should have a better party lifestyle than N. Carolina. Good Luck

Hey great idea

seattle - awesome city but be prepared to kite in a dry suit
portland - near the gorge/hood river, home of sling shot
anywhere in california, san fran has great winds

texas but you need to be way south - and its a huge huge state
north carolina but all the good uni's are inland
boston [see seattle]
chicago - they kite on the lake
if you love to ski - stay north for the best of both worlds
if you want year round kiting - go south

have fun!

Have you actually BEEN to any of these places or are you just quoting what you've read in magazines and on the net?

If you want kiting, good luck, you don't realize how spoilt we are here. I lived in the states for 2 and a half years. Don't go anywhere on the Gulf of Mexico (including Texas) the wind is C**P, florida is only marginally better. What you hear the yanks boasting about when it comes to wind doesn't come even close to our spots that are 'alright'. But if you are set on going to the states and Hawaii isn't your scene or doesn't offer the courses you need, I would look at southern California (the cost of living is quite high for America though). Basically, you won't find a good combination of wind, affordability and good partying. Just bare in mind, anywhere you go will be a culture shock. How old are you exactly btw, because remember the drinking age is 21.

UCSB, beyond any trace of doubt.
In addition to a solid academic reputation, the University has several km of beach, and most students live in the adjacent seaside town Isla Vista (named for the view of majestic Santa Cruz Island). I lived for several years on Del Playa Drive, which is literally on the edge of the ocean.
Frequent fronts in Winter and Spring bring 20-25 knot winds (and waves) right at the back door. In April-May, Jalama (about 90 minutes West) blows 25-30 knots nearly every day (with big heavy waves). In Summer there is a regular, but also somewhat feeble, seabreeze (I am guessing 10-15knots).
If you don't like surfing campus point, Rincon (best right-hander in the West) is 30 minutes by car. Otherwise, find a way into Hollister Ranch for the world's best waves.
The scenery is also awesome (4000 foot mountains rise up behind the town), with extensive wilderness areas for multiday hikes.
A five hour drive gets you to the Sierra Nevada for skiing/snowboarding.
Perhaps best of all: the babes! I think female UCSB students are selected not just on their grades.
You can check-in anytime, but you may never leave...

Whats with the mini attack? YES I have been to both N. Carolina, Cape Hatteras (consistently windy, during the windy season, with both flat water and waves home to Eclipse kiteboarding and a test site for many companies) and Corpus Christie and South Padre Island in Texas (have winds during the season comparable to QLD). Along with Kiting Hood River (the Gorge) in Oregon (Cold, very windy and tends to be very gusty too, like said above home to SS, but far away from any big cities), several spots in San Francisco California (Not a lot of locations with easy launch's, some are quite tricky and dangerous also currents in some spots are also something to watch out for as they tend to steal gear), a couple spots in Chicago (nothing to rave about, and not comparable to QLD either) British Columbia Vancouver Canada would be my choice (after Hawaii) several kiting locations within Vancouver vicinity and Squamish (the spit) being one of the best locations to kite in Canada with very consistent thermals and absolutely beautiful scenery, mind you will be wearing a wetsuit (shorty if your lucky) pretty much all year round. Amazing party life and you can also ski.

I do agree with you D_Meredith79 that in Australia (only been within QLD) you are pretty spoiled with weather, scenery, and wind. Anywhere in the U.S.A. would be expensive and a culture shock. I would recommend Hawaii (never been but hear lots of great things) or Vancouver, British Columbia as cost of living is marginal, many great Uni's, great party life and much to do outside. BC drinking age is 19...

I'll second UCSB. I spent a few weeks there with a mate and it was all time. The frat and sorority parties are amazing (voted 2nd best party college in america when I was there 2 years ago) and the whole town is just college kids between 18-25. The surf is pretty crap, but they get their fun days. There are some pretty fun clubs at Santa Barbara which is only a short drive away, some sick downhill skateboarding, everyone just cruises around on bikes in town.. Probably one of the funnest towns I've been to if you like to drink with hot girls. Just as a heads up though, the Aussie accent works to spark up a conversation but it won't get you everywhere. Out of all the girls i spoke to in IV there was only one that was truly frothing on the fact that I was an aussie.

If you go over there make sure to join a decent fraternity too. Being a token aussie should make this easier (although some won't take in someone that's not from the US, but if your a sick guy people will let it slide). You won't get invited to the best parties if your not in a fraternity, and the **** frat parties usually end up with a "sister" sorority full of ugly chicks.

The wind wasn't amazing while I was there (only a couple of days while I was there it was blowing), but you've got the snow and surf there to keep you going, plus the girls more than make up for any lack of kiting you may have.

PS. I have a few mates that go to Florida each winter for wakeboarding and they dont rate it too highly on the party front.

Good luck!

My vote would be Santa Barbra, La Jolla (Northern San Diego), Portland, or Vancouver

They all have good skiing/snowboarding near by " some closer than other, good kitting (at or near by), good night lifes and have major airports (cheeper flights to places like mexico and the central americas)

FYI at this point in time it will probably be easier to get Canadian Visas than US ones.

I apologise Malibu, I wasn't meaning for it to come as an attack. It's just all I hear about from a great many people is how great places in America are when a lot of them haven't even been there and are only regurgitating what they've seen in a mag or on tv. The case when compared to Aus is in fact that it all looks pretty dismal. I agree there are some places where the lifestyle is awesome, but the conditions are greatly lacking. Westen Australia in summer is world class (we have awesome summer beach weather and a super-consistant seabreeze), we are exceedingly spoiled. I didn't realize this until I travelled abroad.

Due to what I was told I was greatly unprepared for the lack of conditions/suitable beaches/etc and would not like to send someone else on their way unprepared for the reality of the situation.

My apologies again,

Musta been doing something wrong. Even my mate who usually has trouble at this particular game was rolling in it. Throw in a couple of "shrimp on tha barby" and "how ya doin sheilas"... the rest is history.

Can't help you on the true wind stats - try something like windfinder or US gov weather sites for longterm history.

One good thing about SB is that if you can swing a car and sort out driving on the wrong side the world is your play ground some of the best spots on the west coast are with in 10 hrs

Second that, like shooting fish in a barrel (it does work better in some areas though).
