It is a pain in the ***...
Get a proper wakeboard if you want to go on cable or behind a boat.

Cheers

i found it very easy to catch an edge and get face slapped coz not as much rocker. imo there isn't much u can do on a kiteboard behind a boat.

Not enough rocker...
Not enough pop...
Not enough fun...
Not worth wasting your time...

i've only done it behind a fishing boat 90hp. wasn't too bad, mega speed which is fun for a while, surface handlepasses are easy, but no pop which is boring and has you begging for a proper wakeboarding boat. but the kiteboard worked.
just try it and if it sucks get back on the tube

as North Said

Kiteboards have a flatter board structure, i.e litttle rocker. This is due, to the kite pulling you out of the water more, than needing to "pop" yourself out of the water. I have used my kiteboard behind a boat numerous times, and have found it fun, but for serious air time behind a boat, get a wakeboard.

try it, you might like it. if your looking at buying a board that does both kite and boat you wont find one. id rather use a wakeboard kitesurfing than a kiteboard wakeboarding.

good luck

Hi Cabstar,

As others have said, the rocker is what kills the kiteboard behind the boat, or the lack thereof. Kiteboards are meant to be ridden on the rail edging all the time so need a flat rocker to go upwind well.

A Wakeboard rides flat most of the time except when loading up for a jump off the wake. They have no need to cut upwind so can be built with heaps of rocker to suit the wake angle.

Wakeboards can be used kiting but the massive rocker pretty much makes them useless at going upwind so you ride massively powered and spend all of your time riding upwind to hold ground. Give it a miss I reckon.

A kiteboard behind the boat tends to suck to the water surface especially if it has any concave. It can be fun but you'll end up catching rails and face planting a fair bit

A board which is OK for both with also suck at both. I'd stick with the kiteboard as you can go it alone anytime it's windy whereas a wakeboard and boat require an observer and driver and then a couple of other mates to make the petrol affordable. Wakeboarding has ongoing costs which never get any cheaper.

Just my opinion after having done both.

Good winds,

hi cabstar
I use the LF Element with union bindings, and is probably about as close to a wakeboard as a kiteboard can get. There is not as much rocker or pop as a wakeboard, but i have used it behind a boat and can still clear the wake, even when pulled behind a jet ski. It does trip the edge way easier than a wakeboard, but if you want one board to do both, this is your best bet, only problem is LF have stoped making it and am not sure what there equivalent is on there 09 line up.

I rekon the closest kiteboard your going to get a wakeboard will be the new Liquid Force Influence. It hasn't come out yet but from what I've heard its a hard core wakestyle board so should have a pretty good rocker. With some union bindings or the new synergy's I rekon it would be sweet for both kiting and wakeboarding.

the thing is lots of rocker for a kiteboard is only 2 - 2.25inch which is stil very small compared to boat boards ranging from 2.6 - 2.8inch lift in the tips. if it is a Ski boat and not a proper wakeboat with tower and decent wake to hit, just rock a kiteboard fora bit of fun, if its kicks up a big wake and is set up save some cash n get a wakeboard later around winter time, twist daddys arm he might help you out.

I use a wakeboard for kiting and it's better than any twintip kiteboard I've ever ridden. Lots of rocker makes for good carving (especially in the waves) and if you have 4 fins then staying upwind is not problem.
They're also wayyy softer landing airs and ride much smoother through choppy water, which is easy on the knees when the wind is nuking.

Once again there is some truths but also alot of myths about wakeboards in this topic.

There are some wakeboards that work quite well for kiteboarding.

You can go upwind quite easily on a wakeboardd, you dont need a hurricane you just need to use a different technique, of course stomping on your back foot and expecting to go upwind isnt going to work.

The boards i mainly use have 2.7-2.8 inches of rocker which is pretty much wake rocker, the difference is that it is "constant rocker" which means it is the shape of a bananna and has no flat spot, this is what you need for kiting. (you can find this in some wakeboards to, the faster ones have this)

But as said a normal kiteboard will perform very porly on cable and especially boat.

p.s. Liquid force is not really that close to a wakeboard at all as they have hardly any rocker.

Do it. It's fun. You're out on the water enjoying yourself right? You may not be able to do the more advanced stuff so well, but who cares? Not me. I've done it heaps of times, it's definitely better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

hey cabstar.
another thing to consider is the cost of wakeboards vs kiteboards. u should be able to pick up board and boot packages for 600 with wakeboards, kiteboards are more like 800 to 1000 bucks.
if your learning though it would be throwing yourself in the deep end if you were to buy a wakeboard for kitesurfing.

I used a prototype Nobile '09 666 with bindings at a cable park, went much better than most kiteboards but you should get a slightly bigger board than your standard kiteboard and have small fins if you want to use it as a wakeboard. This board has got fair bit of rocker and concave so I was actually getting a bit of pop with it and hitting kickers with fins attached.

Marty, what size 666 were you using with bindings?

Not as a wakeboard, it actually went much better as a wakeboard then the 555 but kiting it was a bit big when the wind picked up, so i recon if you want a board for both maybe just go one size bigger and get a set of cheap bindings for wake

I was thinking of riding it with bindings while kiting as well. maybe the 134 would be a better size.
