just curious, does anyone know if iko recommend a particular amount of wind that is not a good idea to teach in? how about u youngie? any particular rules of thumb to determine kite size for your students?

I haven't seen anything specified in any IKO manuals but I generally call it quits @ 20 knots. Around 17-20 knots I use a 3.5m FlySurfer Maniac with an Airush Square One board. It also depends on the demonstrated competancies of the student - I certainly wouldn't take anyone out in 20 knots if they hadn't already demonstrated good kite control.

Hey All,

IKO have no recommended wind range for teaching. However as an IKO Examiner, I feel more than 25 knots is getting risky. It all depends upon such things as Student ability, student mass, kite size and type, line length, teaching location, water conditions, surrounding area or environment and common sense.

Some schools teach in up to 30 knots as in in Maui, if they didn't they'd go broke. It comes down to risk awareness and management.

The primary goal of an IKO Instructor should be safety, followed by quality of customer experience and progression. I personally teach until 25 knots (Max). Thats all my equipment allows, and that depends upon student bodyweight. For light weights, its less.

Hope this answers any queries.

If you notice an IKO Instructor, either one of mine or others, acting dangerously, please send info to [email protected] and cc me too please. We only want instructors dedicated to safety and who contribute to the overall community of kitesurfing.

Thanks for your help,

Darren Marshall

Hey Darren,

Are you still in windsurf mode ?
Teach at 25knots, are you kidding me, mate ?

Don't freak-out the kitesurfing klass!

i used to be able to windsurf in cyclonic conditions.
but when i learned to kite i reserved it for under 20 knots.
otherwise i would scare the living crap out of myself, even using a 5 m wipi!
i would hate to be a student today if someone gave me a lesson over 20!

I've had 5 lessons cancelled with one instructor, too much wind,no wind and wrong wind direction.
Had a 4 hr lesson today with a new intructor, different location, wind 20 +,mainly body dragging tech, board recovery and kite control ect all with a small kite.Didn,t get to put the board on(due to 20+ wind), so price was reduced.Had an absolute ball

Just trying to put a positive spin on it.Posts of late, seem to be on the negative side inregards to intructors. Most horror stories of heard of seem to be related to inexperienced kiters teaching mates.Keep sh$t canning the instuctors and you'll have a lot more of them out there.

I've noticed there's not many comlaints ref Melb ??

$125.00, I could have p$issed that up against the wall in 4 hours
There was another student present,at stages it was howling the wind was well above 20 +,Had a go of full size kite, not for long though, scared the sh$t out of us."better to be safe than sorry"

After the lessons i put my 2 mtr thunder foil up and that was dragging me through the sand

"na, no cocks sucked"although first time using a harness it felt like something had had a go at minewe have more lessons booked,so the price will end up working out average in the long run.
I'm amazed at how quick you can body drag upwind, bring on the board,"yeeer, baby, yeer
