Go to a shop that stocks at least a couple of brands, try them on before you buy. The same shop should have something you can hang off to test how it feels, any sign of wedgie don't get that one.
All bums are different, thats why you need to go to a shop that has different brands.
The brands I know are popular are North Styler waist, Dakine Fusion and seat (with optional bar pad), Pro Limit felix waist, Pro Limit seat, womens are avavilable in waist and seat in both Dakine and Pro Limit.
Don't skimp on the harness, it is one of the main things that helps so much to make kitesurfing fun and enjoyable.

I use the DAKINE seat harness as it is verry comfortable wearing all day long also has the four straps for holding the spreader bar to the position you are comfortable with and does not move under full load of a 100+KG person like myself swinging under a kite.

I have had five harness's... one for each season, I'm pretty hard on my gear... I gone through a cheap one when I first started (cant even remember the brand) then move on to a Gastra seat harness, that lasted one season. Next season I stuck with a Gastra seat harness, this one lasted a month before tearing apart. I had it fixed and went on to lasting a season. After that I moved over to ProLimit kite seat, now this harness was realy comfy with all the bells & whistles on it. But it only lasted one season. Now I'm riding a dakine nitrous short harness and WOW! this one is so awesome. It does not crush your balls into your throat, It does not ride up your ass or anything close to the thing a seat harness does. You dont feel like your wearing a harness at all.

Every year the cost goes up on the prices i've paid on harness's but the nitrous is well worth it...

Hey Brownee, how does it work? Is the spreader bar part (front) quick-detachable? If it was, I'd have thought that this has the tremendous advantage of one not having to carry so much gear to the beach i.e. for a session, pack kite and board, change into the shorts, shove the harness front part in the kite bag and attach the spreader bar when ready to launch- no extra harness to carry?

the harness is built into the shorts... and yes the spreader is detachable...

so in short;

"get out of car change into shorts/harness, grab kite bag with pump & bar in it, grab board, lock car, walk down beach..."

one less thing to carry...

it does open up the whole wetsuit under your boardies debate again but hey it give's you a definate stance on the subject...

Naish seat - just had its 3rd new set of webbing...design flaw not shared by the Dakine Fusion is that the webbing rubs on the spreader - can get webbing replaced/resewn for about $10...I stick with it 'cos it is like a nice old pair of jeans.

Seats are easier on the ribs/back than waists and you can hold down much more kite IMHO.

However I have been using a DaKine Pyro waist a few times in the warmer weather as waist harnesses rock with boardies - while seats suck.

I reckon get a waist and a seat and try them out in different conditions. Seat - best is anedotally Dakine Fusion, waist - again Dakine Pyro.

For most of summer I used Wipika Impact vest harness,
Works well, its soft backed so you can twist and crunch up to style up.
Good for the hard hits too
Great in summer

The new soft Wipika waist-like Dakine Tabu is awseome with winter wetsuit, soft and not restrictive. With a steamer on you dont even know you are really wearing the harness.

Yeh Iove the Wipika stuff dont throw rocks at me.

hey pornstar, stand proud.

no one beats wipika for performance, of both gear and the most important thing - back up service.

let fashion drive the rest of the "keep up with the jone's".
I want service and gear that works, both for me and my customers and students.
