When I was there a few years back it was plenty windy - 7m or 9m with a surfboard. friends of mine were there a year or so back and lucked out with wind for all but a couple of days. They used their 12's a fair bit. If you can only take one kite maybe a 10 would be the go.

I am headed across to lakey in 4 weeks. I was told the wind won't turn up till late July / august. you can check / email this web site for more info. I hope they are wrong so we both get wind.

I have reading up a bit on malaria in sumbawa and I would probably recommend some tablets or similar preventative. (Drug is called Doxycycline)

Forget about wind there till middle of August...
If the trades blow you get no wind there as Easterly are totally of shore!
When the trades start to dye and turn more south then the thermal kick in and it get windy.
2 Kites for Lakey a 12m and a 8m for a guy 75 kilos.

A few points on Lakeys

4 well known breaks

-lakey pipe..... higher tide only.....side going side off. Short, hollow, fast, shallow. All the barrel shots are taken here, full of photos sluts as soon as a photog is spotted in water or on the tower, empties out the rest of the time

- lakey peak......the best surfing waves mid - high tide...the worlds most classic classic A frame short right , better longer left. but a bit side on for kiting, heavy..... pushing lots of water and choppy when wind and surefres usually in the water but can be good

both are close to the hotels on the beach

- Nungas - 1 km downwind - classic long [maybe 300m!] left winding from side on to side off in the end section. Seciony and current on inside makes it less popular for the surfers but is the only break that is still smooth in the seabreeze so afternoons can see conflict. All tides but hollower at low tide and getting in and out over sharp cobblestones is hard at low tide - you can kite down and get a motorcycle ride back.

- Periscopes - 4ks downwind - get a motorbike ride there-dead onshore in the seabreeze so rarely kited. Mornin high tides best. Very hollow barrelling Right. Can be world class surfing when its on.


Forget a twintip, its waves or nothing. Definitely pack at 12 and 9 , and 7m can be used some seasons quite a lot and not at all other seasons.

Bring surfboards that are long enough to handle some juice as regularly hits six foor plus

Pack malaria pills [preferably malarone or artemenisin, as doxycyclline sees you ry in the sun [talk to Andy at SOS about thta] , and antibiotics for gastroenteritis.

Can you kite on the low tide in the neaps, or is it better on the springs with a high in the arvo?

If you pick your waves, you can surf the peak on any tide - Low tide just makes the paddle out to the reef a bit of a hassle to negotiate. Pipe gets ledgy at low tide, but still works ok on smaller days. Getting in and out to the reef at Nungas is painful on low tides too (heaps of sea urchins).

Please note that Lakey is totally not a place for beginner and is already becoming quite crowded!!! If you are not very good in waves do not go there....
If you are thinking to bring a TT to Lakey then definitely you don't belong there!!!
Beginner-Intermediate have tendency to screw up all the spot as take off area is very narrow! They are not welcome and the many Pros will make sure you have a bad time in the water..
The closer hospital is in Bali, reef is very nasty...
And yes there is Malaria so take your pills with you!
