Do you surf?

Best recommendation-just get a used cheapy surfboard about 600-602 and have a go. Cheap, easy and effective.

Depends what you want to do, if it's just for around Perth eg. sloppy onshore I can highly recommend something like the Airush Choptop or North Rocketfish, they will be easy to ride unstrapped and more suited to sloppy onshore conditions. Will work well both strapped and unstrapped, and easy to tack/unstrapped airs/try new tricks on etc.

If you plan on riding or have access to decent waves then definetly consider a normal surfboard shape as mentioned, cheap s/h polyester board will work fine or a kite branded surfboard if you want more durability for strapped riding,

Enjoy
Matt
PS Some of the local shops may have demos, worth a shot.

I've been enjoying my Naish Fish 5'5"

review here: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=50786

Unless you particularly want to go unstrapped, or kite down in the South West on double overhead waves, you might find that these short & wide strapped boards like the fish are a good all round option for smaller waves, plus you can still jump them, do your backrolls off the lip, and they are great for light winds as well.

Yeah those Naish Fish's look the goods and I think would suit Perth summer conditions....I too am looking to buy something for the summer.

Who is the Naish dealer in Perth/WA? Any idea when the new range (09/10) is due?

I am also really interested in the Choptop as a summer board for Perth. Anyone out there ride one of these or have any comments?

Also will prob wait to check out the new 09/10 choptop. I believe around September may be its release?

Why spend $1000 on a Naish Chinese or Thai made popout with the $ going overseas-when you could get a used board here for $150 or so OR get a CUSTOM locally made board for $500-800????

Thanks Matt, I appreciate what you are saying and am a firm believer in supporting the local. I guess this also applies to the local retailers who I would support by purchasing a product from them?

Unfortunately I have'nt seen anything I like for $150. I already have a couple of old surfboards that fit in that category.

The custom is definitely an option to consider. However you dont get to demo before you hand over your money. I believe DaLewy is probably the best choice for a custom kite surfboard in Perth and I've heard mixed reports about the actual end product some friends have received (dimensions, templates etc specified not being supplied - however written on the board). DaLewy is a great shaper never the less and has some great boards out there. I may well end up with one!

Anyways, with this all said I am still keen to try out (or hear opinions on current model) some new release boards, like the choptop early next season...and take things from there.

I have 2 small stuey martins i use for strapped riding. ones a 5'6" and ones a 5'8" ..both fantastic boards.. he is an awesome shaper and the boards seem to hold up quite well considering the beating they get.. I think if you are coming of a twin tip your best option is a small strapped surfboard.. then you can move onto the unstrapped stuff once you have that wired..

Agreed on Stuey's boards-added bonus that he's a great rider-helps when designing/shaping boards to be able to do protos and see how they perform.

Hey Guys,

There is a board shaper north of Perth who shapes for Ryland Blakeney. Rylands riding boards that are shape round 6"7' but 3 inchs are removed from the nose and tail making it a 6"1 board.

I've seen them up close but never have ridden one but they look good for a light wind board and Ryland reckons you can paddle surf them too.

Somebody may know the shapers name!

Cheers
Rich

Try Dave Lewis (da Lewy) a few crew having been giving him a good rap lately. Just find Murray Smith and Lewy's usually around.
Marty L from Delta is shaping boards for North and local crew at Margarets, also well worth a look.
In Lano our local shaper is Wade Freeman who has been shaping some joy boards for the gang. Pretty happy with my latest stick.
If you want his number PM me.

I am a total nob about surfing...never will do it because it is too hard for an old fart like me. However, I think all boards are cool, this is the joy of our sport.....you can enjoy large surfboards strapless on light days, or big clean waves. But it can also be heaps of fun on a skim board etc. etc.

At the moment I am looking for a board that is tough and that I will ride with straps so I can jump again. I just can't seem to make my mind up about the Naish 09 5'7" Custom Fish, or the Slingshot Celeritas Tri .......but need to rob a bank first.

2008 North Rocketfish (green ones) are great boards come in 509 and 600 and designed by John Amundson from Oahu (new ones 2009-white ones are designed in W OZ and IMO are not as good as the JH ones) who is a great shaper. They surf unreal and are super tough boards-no worries jumping em' or losing them on Indo reefs (another story....)

I second that. What a complete waste of cash to go out and buy a branded board, targeted at the kiting market when a second hand or custom surfboard would do exactly the same job, for half the cost at least. Atleast a custom board can be designed for your exact needs.

If you'd like to check out some different Kite surfboards, Choice Kitesurfing near Fremantle has the biggest range of strapped/unstrapped kite surfboards in Australia. It would be worth your while to come in and check out what we have, ask us any questions and have a good look at what different shapes can offer you.
