thats like asking 'whats the best car", there are so many different kites designed for different aspects of kiting. What is the best kite 4 u will b completely different to what the best kite is for the next guy. If looking for advice on this u should state, proficiency, style, weight, wind conditions, board size/type. Then people can probably point you in the right direction.

grover has better relaunch, bert has questionable resale, often attracts large flocks of pidgeons

Boy the Noobs cop it over winter don't they.

Matt, perhaps a better question would be:
"What are a few good all rounder kites and why?"

As the eloquent folks above have said the definitive kite is elusive and subjective (in black and red or any colours).

How about supplying some info on your weight etc. Also what you hope to do with it such as riding twin tips or surfboards, flat water/surf/cruising/downwinders etc. Be realistic too - there is no way you will be charging over head high waves in your 1st season.

So anyway, I just got an Eclipse Nano 9m that is maybe not super spectacular in any area but an extremely well behaved genuine all rounder that happily achieves a bit of everything and will be great fun in cr@ppy onshore waves for me. Works for me and my 85kgs in 16-30kts anyhoo.

The Ozone Sports are tasty too. Plenty of choices which does complicate things a bit.

Any other kites suggested?

Good luck.

A common line of thinking is that Bert and Ernie kites are for closet Bowmosexuals...

My 9mtr Ozone Sport, that's going on sale very soon, would be an excellent choice.

As GF said, it depends on a lot of things.

no matter what, you have made a good choice if you stay clear from Best.

add North to that list too.

he never said he was a noob. it's a reasonable guess that he is but the question could also be legitimately asked by a highly skilled kiter who still uses his/her 3 year old kites in a range of conditions/disciplines but who hasn't followed recent tech trends and now wants to update.

in which case an all-round kite may be one that's fun for a range of skill levels and works reasonably well in waves, for freestyle, speed and cruising.

obviously there are lots of good kites out there, some highly specialised and others more useful in a big range of contexts for a big range of riders. personally i've been stoked with my switchblade 3s that i bought second hand and seem to do everything pretty well.

Nuttin wrong with the kite it was 100% rider fk up! Yet another "ok one more run then I am packin it in." syndrome. Yep - good thing I wasn't half as gumby as the Ozone kookster! Sorry Gary! Further proof that the rider has more say in the calamaty than the kite most of the time..

Dunno about a kite tomoz as I managed to do some serious damage to my foot/heel in when I copped that set on the head. Very strange injury but giving me copious pain and grief. I am hoping for Sat/Sun but would only be 50/50 by then. Limp limp limp.. Still not sure what happened, wifey thought maybe a cobbler as it looked like poison spreading but no puncture wound in sight. BL00DY PAINFUL!! Is it summer yet? Is it summer yet? Is it summer yet? Is it summer yet..

Back on topic..

Matt you really are spoilt for choice these days and it appears there are very few kites that are actually lemons out there. For me as an intermediate who prefers downwind freeriding, I am fairly confident that my 9m Nano will fullfill my requirements very nicely but as learner kite - well I just wish I had learnt on something this sweet!!

BTW don't listen to brand bashers (Best always cop it from the great unwashed ignorant types). Nearly every brand has a kite made specifically for what you need. Just get out there, decide on a budget, try some kites and you won't look back.

For the final 2c I reckon as a newb, in order of priority, you need:

Safety (good depower/bar setup)
Stability (well behaved - no luffing etc)
Wind range
Reliability
Performance - Boost/turning speed/upwind ability etc

Stick to the above (IMHO) and you can't go wrong..
