It's a long way and can get hot, but you can fly in, self sufficient camp then kite here.

I reckon Lancellin would be a good bet, its not too far a drive, you get waves on the reef, and nice flat water inside the reef. If you are only going for a few days, no point spending a day getting to and from it.

Gday Graceful,

Geraldton is great but it depends on what you mean by camping.....

If you want a powered site then there's a caravan park right near Point Moore, good for some flat water and surf.

If you head about 30k's further north, you've got Coronation Beach. Same wind as Gero (obviously), massive area of flat water with some good surf on the outer reef. Camping is more basic but right on the beach, I think there's long drop toilets (or maybe flushing) and someone there to collect your money. You could camp further up the beach for free with no toilets but the rangers might get cranky.

Both spots can get crowded during the season but Coro's is better with more room and if you've got all day to wait for the crowds to thin out you're laughing.

Hi Graceful,

Gero is great no doubt and nice and windy, but you can't go past Lano for a good allround location close to home. It never gets overly crowded, it's only a 90 minute drive. You have cheap camping in the carapark right on the point where the flat and waves are. It gets heaps windy (though not as much as Gero) and has a great pub for a feed and a quiet beer when the sun goes down on a hard days kiting.

Good winds,

Yup Lano is a fantastic spot and not to be missed. You have flatwater, waves, beach break and open water reefs.

You will have to deal with some of the Windsurfers out on the peak but you should go alright with a bit of respect and caution.

Good luck in your hunt.

Hey Graceful,

Usually add 5 knots to the Perth windspeed to get a rough idea of Lano wind. I reckon a 9m is good for most wind for an average sized rider on a twinny. You could do it easy on a surfboard with a 7m.

There are better waves than the main peak which usually swarms with Euros poleys, have a look at the left hander on the edge of the channel upwind of the reef directly upwind of Lano Island. Just be careful of the slab reef if you get caught a bit deep on the wave.

Lots of other good waves on back beach and other areas. Do a downwinder from Ledge and explore.

Have fun!
