I'm headed to Cairns in mid-May.
I was told it might be a little early for solid tradewinds but after watching the charts for the last fortnight i'd say it's pretty solid at the moment! 18-22kn forecast solid.
www.australiankitesurfari.com.au/If you are serious about spending money coming to Cairns/Port Douglas then I really suggest you have a look at Australian Kitesurfari that runs out of Cairns. Ant is a top bloke and will ensure you a great time. Have a good look at his website. A group of Cairns locals went up last week and said it blew its ring out. In fact, everyone trip they have done has been very windy. Apparently the spot Ant takes you to is one of the most consistently windy spots up here.
I am going to hate myself for saying this, and will no doubt cop some crap from the locals for advertising, but....... we had a great start to the season, very little (almost none) rain and constant 15 to 25 knot days since the start of March. In fact I would say it has been one of the better years start to a season I have experienced since my earlier poley days and now kiting (sorry again locals, share the love I say

)
As to kiting Cairns (Yorkeys Knob Beach), it can be really hit and miss this time of year as the wind great one day then fickle the next due to being slightly offshore. Most of generally kite with kites between 10 to 12m for most of the year, but we quite often get days when you can and should be on smaller. Keep in mind that we only get a wind slop waves and on a high tide can be very choppy and our water is the most clear in all of Aus (note the severe sarcasm).
The later you leave your trip into the year the better for consistency.
Port Douglas is also very good and worth jumping on Bretts website 'Windswell" for local Port conditions and reef tours that he conducts.
Green Island (out of Cairns) is also a great place to kite and if wind is forecast I will guarantee it will be there. The wind at Green Island is often in the 25 to 30 knot range at times (even higher), just need to be mindful of the tide (too shallow) and where to launch and what to look out for (helicopter and sea plane.)
Hope this helps and apologies to Cairns locals if we get invaded this year
