Brighton is where alot of Kiters go, same with St.kilda, Altona works when Brighton and St.Kilda doesn't, you can head down to Rye, or even over to Geelong, Pt.Henry, further out to Ocean Grove, or Point Danger in Torquay.

So yeah if you can travel you have a few options!

yeah

go altona in SE or E

go saint kilda in S SW or W

go brighton in SW W or NW

Go rye or rosebud in NE, N or NW

Altona has great flat water and great waves in 25knts +

Saint kilda is busy but has a lot of space and there is flat water and choppy water

Brighton is choppy and there is no shallow water but is a nice beach and can be flatter in a NW

Rye and Rosebud are great in the winter because there are a lot of northerlies in winter and the water there is butter flat and behind the sandbank there are good bay waves

Mate, summer is over in southern aussie and the seabreezes have stopped (even in magical WA), you just get random frontal winds now (mostly northerly or south westerly).

You need to look for places with trade winds in the north of aussie (cairns) but i don't know when they are most reliable..??

if the question is where is the best place to kite at the moment, then really Nth Qld is really the only place that has any real consistency this time of year. However for nother discussion, where are the best places in Aus full stop!! Having kited in Cairns and Port Douglas heaps they wouldnt even come in the top 10 places in Aus in my view. Try Lizard Isl, Cooktown, Shark Bay, Alva Beach, Exmouth (No1), Geraldton, Woodies et etc.

Should i go to Maui on the 2nd May to the 10th or try somewhere in Oz?. Good points for Oz is keeping the money here, not polluting the atmosphere with plane smog to far away. I prefer a mixture of surf and flat water (maybe more surf),. Help please

I'm headed to Cairns in mid-May.
I was told it might be a little early for solid tradewinds but after watching the charts for the last fortnight i'd say it's pretty solid at the moment! 18-22kn forecast solid!

Just counting down the days.
It's even worse now i've got my big travel bag all loaded with gear and ready to go.

If you are looking for a trip in June to QLD. Consider the ARSA Kiteboarding classic. The event was a huge success last year even tho we had some weird weather conditions. The parties and wake winch park made up for that.

check out the website

Hi Korma where in Cairns do you kite, what are the conditions, Do you need a car? can you stay somewhere and kite without travelling? At the moment I am prepared to book flights tomorrow morning (Friday 18.4.08) to Maui at $1350 return from Sydney so I may consider Cairns if it sounds a go-er.

www.australiankitesurfari.com.au/

If you are serious about spending money coming to Cairns/Port Douglas then I really suggest you have a look at Australian Kitesurfari that runs out of Cairns. Ant is a top bloke and will ensure you a great time. Have a good look at his website. A group of Cairns locals went up last week and said it blew its ring out. In fact, everyone trip they have done has been very windy. Apparently the spot Ant takes you to is one of the most consistently windy spots up here.

I am going to hate myself for saying this, and will no doubt cop some crap from the locals for advertising, but....... we had a great start to the season, very little (almost none) rain and constant 15 to 25 knot days since the start of March. In fact I would say it has been one of the better years start to a season I have experienced since my earlier poley days and now kiting (sorry again locals, share the love I say )

As to kiting Cairns (Yorkeys Knob Beach), it can be really hit and miss this time of year as the wind great one day then fickle the next due to being slightly offshore. Most of generally kite with kites between 10 to 12m for most of the year, but we quite often get days when you can and should be on smaller. Keep in mind that we only get a wind slop waves and on a high tide can be very choppy and our water is the most clear in all of Aus (note the severe sarcasm).

The later you leave your trip into the year the better for consistency.

Port Douglas is also very good and worth jumping on Bretts website 'Windswell" for local Port conditions and reef tours that he conducts.

Green Island (out of Cairns) is also a great place to kite and if wind is forecast I will guarantee it will be there. The wind at Green Island is often in the 25 to 30 knot range at times (even higher), just need to be mindful of the tide (too shallow) and where to launch and what to look out for (helicopter and sea plane.)

Hope this helps and apologies to Cairns locals if we get invaded this year

Nice one gumby, since you posted it has rained non stop.

I would definately recomend the kite surfari trip. The guys who went up haven't stopped raving. The spot they go to has chrystal clear shallow water and white sandy beaches in contrast to the brown mud and onshore slop that we get at Yorkeys. The wind is very consistent up on the Cape at this time of year and the scenery is amazing.

Port is also a good call so either Port or the Cape don't even bother with Yorkeys plus the locals are all pricks

Morning Gumby, Camo
Having persisted with Yorkeys for two years I recently decided to try a couple of other areas around Cairns.
Green Island is all that was all that was promised and more! I will be making this a regular visit..........
I was also lucky enough to do the last trip up north with Ant and Rob from Kiresurfaris and I would put it on the list of must do trips if you like lots of wind, flat clear water and great camping. Kited all day every day as the wind does not stop blowing. Had to take two days off kiting when I got back as I was completely worn out from the trip.
Whilst Yorkeys isn't perhaps the greatest spot (it's ****ty but close to home) there are a great many places within an hours drive/boat ride that I have kited in the last couple of months that have been sensational. The thing that we forget here is that the wind is actually super consistent but not always right in on the coast, Green Is is the best example of this. The are many other islands and cays that are exposed to these conditions it's just a matter of accessing them.

Better go to work and save some money for a boat?

I wouldn't have a clue about the Australian Kitesurfari trips, but the "handle pass masters" are raving about it, and Ant really is a top bloke

If you're travelling up the Queensland coast the best spot is Elliot Heads, on the coast near Bundaberg. They have a large flat water rivermouth that is becoming legendary on a south-easterly. Cairns itself is a 12-16m kite size area apart from twice a year when a fat bastard can use a 10m. This year however is shaping up to be a dry year which means solid south-south easterlies with the sun out and young, topless women on rthe beach before the wind kicks in. So it is worth a look. Port Douglas on the southerly days, Cairns on the sourth-easterlies.
