Nowhere. Don't use one. Learn to bodydrag upwind back to your board.

One end to your board.

then very carefully attach the other end to that annoying painful wisdom tooth.
Drive at 60kph and throw board out of window.

Can't think of anymore places to attach it.

hey pop41,
i hated when all these people told me to give up my leg rope - it was dangerous this, hit me in the head that, and the all knowing: you'll be sorry.

it was like my security blanket that i didnt want to give up.

in the end i was in an area where i could practice body dragging to get back to my board, or stand up and walk if i got too pissed off with it, and it just seemed superfluous.

since then, i havent touched it again - although the dog enjoys chewing it - the little bastard.

anyway - now im with those people who badgered me to get rid of it: dont bother.

Always plenty of pro's and Cons to the leash question.

If you want to use one get a small piece of nylon webbing material (like the stuff used for tie downs on a car)and double it over to make a loop. Burn a hole through it with a soldering iron and attach it to your board using one of the screws used for your fins. Make sure you use a stanless steel washer. Through the weebing loop you can place a zip tie as an attachment point that is weak. It will break if you get dragged too badly.

Attach it to the heelside of your board.

I have used a reel leash for over 2 years without any problems and of course have never lost a board.

Always use a helmet and preferably use a reel leash.

Don't attach one - You are way safer learning how to body-drag bag upwind to your board, then it flinging back and hitting you un-conscious in the head or even chest - It can happen If you insist on having one, deck out with an impact vest and helmet for protection and safety!

Don't wear one, just adds another unnecessary dangerous aspect to the sport. I got hit in the head last week by the board, and that was without a leash. Hurt enough, can't imagine what it would be like flinging back from a leash.

You can buy the nylon webbing tape usually where you buy the reel leashes(Most Kiting shops). Attach it to the under the screw of one of your fins on your board. It works better when it is in the middle of the front or the back of the board.

I used one for about 10mths whist learning. It was a benefit because I could easily get straight back on the board after falling off the 100th time during a session. Also dont try jumps whilst you are attached to it...thats when you can seriously hurt yourself.

And you must wear a helmet and an Impact vest. Be safe and all the best!

u r supposed to learn up wind body dragging the first lesson. not only to get your board back but there have been situations were upwind body dragging has been the best solution to a dangerous situation.
please for your safety and possibly others leave the leash at home and take half an hour to learn up wind body dragging.

being a hardcore kiter like myself board leashes can get in the way so i only wear one when i am doing ***** handlepasses such as mobes and kgbs, but when i am feeling extreme i take it off so i can do heart attacks and rock the cradles
i have a number of attachments on my board such as
handle
every fin hole
speed lines
extra grip grab handles and also have on on my rear fin so i can do climb the ladders

but be careful and wear ur proper safety gear like hemet booties seat harness and bps incase u sink when finishing ur deftifying moves

Nice one GreenPat! Chuck Norris is my hero! If the board came flying towards him, i'm sure he could do a swift spin kick and send it back!

My sentiments exactly - 100% with you on every single point made Robbo.
(cept that bit about the dog - mine still just eats other dogs )
I too thought it was a good feeling having a leash - its a way better one NOT
Now I too have joined the poo-poo leash crew so I can tell you :-
One end to the boot catch latch the other to your bumper
Reduces the risk of serious boot-lid-flying-open incidents
One of the few worthwhile uses for a board leash

it seems to me as the learner-using-board-leash argument is split between those that have seen someone collected by a board, and those that have not :)

It would also be interesting to see whether those who have been collected by a board were:

Wearing a Helmet

Wearing an impact vest

Using a solid neoprene board leash instead of a retractible Reel Leash

Had a built in weak point to seperate the board in the case of a very heavy lofting or crash

I have successfully used a Reel leash for many years and will continue to do so. I also use all of the above safety precautions.

The result is that I have never had an accident while using a leash and have never lost a board.

I also get a lot more time kiting as the board is quickly retrievable if I miss a move.

Thought the post was a simple question as to the appropriate position to attach a leash !!

If you are learning then yeah use a retractable with a helmet, impact vest etc. Gloves are good too save your hands and fingers.

Make sure you have some sort of quick release. When I was learing my leash got wrapped arround a cray pot float and I was strung out like a bungee jumper with no return. After 5 minutes the leash snapped. Then I stopped using the leash.

Then one day thought I'd attach one to a pickle fork. Bad idea came a gutser in surf and the board caught, then the board (ping) sliced my left wetsuit leg half off (I was wearing a helmet for the cold). That killed it for me, no leash learn to body drap, kite with good mates who can help you find your board.
(PS I've kited Vic, QLD, NT, TAS and WA and have always found these people, just a few words hi not from arround here any pointers, bit of respect etc..) gota get to NSW one day, wind dies every time I'm there .

Anyway more details on attachment ...
If you are going to attach it to your board middle of tail is good, never middle of board acts like a sea anchor. Also don't have surf fins on that end use ATacs or nice ones that won't gouge should they hit. Avoid pickle fork style and dove tail boards too. Try dragging the board by leash through water and see what happens you will work it out real quick.

Oh if your are using the leash never look back to where your board is (think about this one ). And never use your arm to protect your self undless you know kung fu, etc and how to do it properly with out breaking your arm. A guy in our crew had all the gear and yep broke is arm.

The key here is get kite/water confidence then ditch the leash.
DO NOT do speed runs with a leash, your just asking for it. No protection will save you in a 30 Knot wipe out with a leash.

Me I've kited sine 1999 done all the stupid things in 10 - 50 knots and I'm a big lad. Bounced on reefs, land, into boats, rocks, beaches etc. and Killed 8 kites in surf over the years. Only lost 1 board, but saved the kite that time.

But kite/water confidence is the key, spend time working this out before all the other fun stuff and you have more fun safer, while being able to deal with the suprises.

I'm beginning to think foot straps are a bad idea now.
Doing a bit of that no strap stuff and it's fun.

Make sure its a coil leash. and attach it to a fin bolt. But between the leash and boad add some spare flying line, if dragged hard, it will snap before the board comes back.

And with my NSI leash and board my board doesnt come back AT ALL!, i normally have to pull the board back in!, the only down side i see with it is in surf, it sometimes can get the board in the way.
