There's nowhere to kite in Melbourne in a northerly. Way around the bay near Rye works well.

Hi there
On northerlys the best place to head to is the peninsular (rosebud - rye)
If your short on time Brighton beach is the answer

I just had a look on google earth, it shows brighton beach should be a perfect cross shore on a northerly, is this not the case? or is brighton just a real crappy kiting location? Otherwise I can't understand why you would encourage me to go all the way to sorrento if brighton beach is cross shore. Thanks

When the wind is showing northerly on faulkner, brighton seems to get more of a slightly NE, so it has to have some west (even a little) to be cross shore. The cross off is very gusty.

thanks saffer, so if the wind will be north/west rather than north, Brighton should be the go. i'm pretty shore this will be the case anyway for this time of year.

thanks hopefully someone will be out on mon morn and can show a torquay boy the bay quality.

cheers

Is anyone actually kiting these days in the bay? As it's been pretty cold. I just wander if there are hard core guys out there in the water this time of the year (especially due to ****ty winds). I haven't been out for few months now... hoping to finish the renovation so i can have free time during the real season.

try green point rather than brighton beach, you can get some good bay waves on a NW and its not so gusty.
go south past brighton beach and turn in where you see the war memorial, just opposite the big pub (milanos).

yeah i kite on a N off green point and Brighton beach you should head back in when you can't feel your feet and face but i don't thats why i have been sick for a few weeks now

but yeah very gusty off Brighton i have found my kite falling out of the sky a few times now

I kited in brighton last Wednesday! Northerly's are great at brighton beach. Geezzzzzzzzzz it was cold...... i lasted about an hour then felt some hypothermia setting in so i did the mature thing and decided to come in. i feel a bit stupid because i went out in 39knot winds with my naish boxer 12m sle 07. i managed ok but i was going against what is totally recommended, i just enjoy (or addicted to) the power. anyways i know the risks and have no excuse when i get hurt.......

yeah this week is meant to be crazy!

Tuesday
Northwesterly wind 25 to 35 knots, locally reaching 40 knots, shifting westerly
during the morning at 30 to 40 knots. Wind then easing to 20 to 30 knots late in
the day and tending west to northwesterly at night. Waves mostly 1.5 to 2.5
meters.
