I've got 4 days at rotto mid feb and i'm just wondering if it's worth taking my kite with me. Seems to get some pretty decent winds over there but I'm not sure about which spots suit the southerlies or souwesters, bearing in mind all those reefs, cliffs and jaggedy looking rocks. Any body kiting rotto got any advice???

have a look at this map www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=1000&shownew=on

as toby suggests Salmon Bay is probably the best option in a SSW (launcing around where the number 7 is on the map) although I have also kited both sides of the point (natural jetty) near Kingstown Barracks but once past the point, if it goes belly up, your next stop maybe Lancelin or the very narly phillip rock just offshore!

On the inside (Salmon Bay) near Fairbridge Bluff you may find some small surf. There's also a wave off salmon point (chickens) and a bommie which breaks on big swells in the middle of the bay towards Mary Cove.

Thomson Bay on an easterly is also an option launching from the natural jetty but there are heaps of moorings to negotiate and if you drop your kite chance are you will snag on one of them. Would love to kite transit with some swell on a good ENE'er.

Anyone ever kited Parker Point?

yes, with a southerly and some luck you can launch at strickos, look out for the rodney boys out at strickos, they are very localised, like hawaii! and do not like the kiting people

always thought strikko a good option
good launching beach to the west at narrow neck (is the whale gone?)

salmon good, waves at fairbridge , gusty further east

kited parkers on an easterly, soso choppy water

aint no locals at rotto thou those staying on the island may reckon they are, there is a "comp" on tuesdays every so often
the ranger been there a while now closest to a local, friendly guy generally
