Hi
I have just arrived in Melbourne last night. Although for the moment I am still waiting for my kitegear to arrive (always the same problem with flying), I am very keen to go out on the water. So tell me where should I go for kiting and to meet other kitesurfers. (also where to go to have a good beer, as it is my first time in Melbourne I dont know any place, so any advice is welcome)
I am currently staying in Hampton.

Hampton Beach - should be handy

Brighton Beach - a little further up the bay

StKilda - Is really busy and IMO not a very nice place to kite

Altona on a SE - Nice flat water on high tide, small waves friendly people

Check out kbv.org.au and the MAKO (Melbourne Average Kitersurfers Org.) group on facebook

Definitely can start off with Hampton beach given you sound like your just down the road! Aside from that check out www.kitebeach.com.au for a list of other sites and recommendations for wind directions.

Personally i don't mind kiting at St Kilda as afterwards your nice and close to the pubs and cafe's for a post-session drink. The St Kilda 'pond' is currently a no-go zone due to underwater works/construction so if your after super flat water you might be out of luck. If your down in Hampton or Brighton then there's always the local hotels on Beach Rd for a drink, but the social scene is far more lively up St Kilda & Port Melbourne.

If you've got a hire car then just go for a drive along the coast from Hampton up to Port Melbourne in the afternoon once the seabreeze has kicked in and you'll soon figure out where the popular spots are.

Oh, and welcome to Melbourne! Hope you have a great time.
