Went looking for wind today , and wind wise it was a wierd day. Ended up cruising around Flinders, and to see 50 plus guys siting out the back waiting for 1 footers, made be feel bad for laughing so hard. What a **** sport, I mean , these guys probably sit in gridlocked traffic all week thing about their gridlocked surf they might have on the weekend, poor blokes.

Don't laugh they probably feel sorry for us for the endless frustrating days of no wind and then when there is one its family day or somethings on.Not to mention the eagerly awaited events and no wind

i agree with you both
i try to say hello when i go past them and they usually look unhappy when there are more whitecaps then ridable waves. then again it hurts when there are excellent seabreezes for 4-5 days straight and every afternoon you are not free.
kitesurfing has a better playground at least when there are no waves u can still cruize the ocean and jump for that matter.

The surf was cranking here in Vic yesterday, and the day before for that matter, you just had to be at the right spot. The 50, or more likely 15 crew you saw out at Flinders would have been surfing 2 to 3 feet, Gunna was 6 to 8 foot bombs all day.

The thing about surfing is that when you paddle out there it all becomes an experience, it isn't really about getting wave after wave, you forget about all the hassles of life and just think about surfing with your mates. Kiting on the other hand is a full on experience, from the time you launch your kite until you drop it it is go go go. I have kited 5 out of the last 7 days, but the two days i didn't i pumped up my kite and sat there for 2 hours, one day in my wettie as it was a frustrating 13 knots and not building, i had plenty of punters on the beach looking at me and feeling sorry.

Kiting takes 3 weeks to learn, surfing takes years, and even after that you might only be able to surf intermediate breaks. Its like snowboarding and skiing, after 2 weeks of boarding you can take on black runs, whereas skiing takes months even seasons to get to the same level, yet boarders compare themselves to skiers by talking about what runs they can do. I board, have done since 1992, have surfed for over 20 years, and have been kiting for 5 years.

There are a lot of crew around who tried to surf but were kooks and now kite, and think they rip, these are the guys that crack me up.

it was 50, and yeah heard Gunna was cranking. Still don't get with all the web cams, and information, what were they doing there?. Agree different sports different vibe, but it still looked pretty lame.

Nothing beats a lengthy Tube Ride whether paddle in or with your kite.

But then again that is an experience only a surfer knows.

Surfing the first passion and kiting made it available to me all day!

Cheers

what about looking at kiteboarding from a skateboarding or bmx perspective? the amount of days you actually get it good kiting compared with these 2 sports is a joke.

depends how you ride i guess, but for the majority i would say yes its pretty tame, probably the reason why they are not skateboarding, bmxing, rollerblading or using boots on their kiteboard i guess. soft.

I feel sorry for kitesurfers, always emulating. When you watch videos I think that was pretty good, almost looked as good as surfing. Surfers pull more ariels, barrels and turns. Kiters, one turn to closeout slop is film material. Kitesurfers have got a long way to go....

it has potential still i think, you just need to focus on the one part of surfing you can get right and probably do as good as or better than, AIRS. once ppl stop pretending unstrapped is the future it will progress.

Only because people keep filming good kite"surfers" in onshore slop conditions because they surf in cross offshore. The operative here being surfers and not kiters – regretably I am the later or is that former, I always get the too mixed up!

If not comfortable or not confident in kiting cross offshore on a surfboard then woodies offshore section would be ideal to learn some basic down the line turns in the flat water....

Although, twas a nice dig at waveslave

So what do you call the kooks that cant kite but can surf, perpetual beginners?

Well really if your gonna pull airs on waves you mosewell just get out a twinny. I don't see the point of straping a massive surfboard on your feet which just makes arials harder when you can just ride a twinny and use the power of the kite and the shape of the lip. If your going to do turns I think you gotta go strapless or at least not have straps which are square, have to have natural stance and ability to change it depending on swell size and wind strength.

But what would I know I'm just a kitelooping flat water bandit with **** for brains.

you need the extra width and boyancy so you dont sink when going down the line where your kite power is less, it also helps with punting off the lip and sliding through the foam. granted you dont need a massive board or a thruster but a 5'6/5'8 twin fin i think is really good for airs and stuff.

i wanna see more of this sort of waveriding.

my 2 cents anyhow.
