I used to windsurf and am now venturing towards kiting. Aparently this has been done by lots of people. But I was also told that the type of person that does this was generally "crap at windsurfing". Is this true ? Who has done this and if so, what was your ability ?

My windsurfing friends so far have proved their point as the majority of ex windsurfers I talk to, were "crap" according to my friend's scale of being a decent windsurfer. I would like to prove them wrong.

I converted, and have been kiting now for just over two years. I windsurfed before that for in excess of 12 years quite consistently (since I was 10 years old).

Trust me if you do it you will never go back. I was told that, and denied, and denied and denied. Then I got boosted for the first time and have never stepped on a windsurfer since. But, that is me. I can't speak for others. :)

I know good windsurfers that have converted to kiting and will never go back and sold their gear. They all agree the equipment is lighter and more compact and kiting allows more versatility for tricks. I know a few windsurfers that do both. The most common reason a good winsurfer won't change to kiting is because they have to go through that learning stage all over again.

I went and had lessons to learn windsurfing and found standing on the board hauling up the sale killed my back. I spent 2 weeks having lessons, after each lesson then had to go to chiropractor, lesson, chiro, lesson, chiro..... Did this 4 times then gave up and learnt to kite. Been doing it for 3 years and totally addicted, no more chiro either.

I've done both, its a non issue. The convienience of kites, the gear fits in your boot, getting out and planning sub 20knts and the big air make all the difference for me.

Ok will give you a quote from a converted ex-windsurfer who was quite good'
Its the most fun Ive ever had on water. ( kiteing that is)

Have a look at some of the older pro kiters you might find that in there bios alot of those guys were pro windsurfers.
I think Darren Marshall is an ex-windsurfer and Id like someone to try tell him that he swaped to kiteing because he wasnt any good that would be funny

Sorry, I may have confused the question. I also know a few kiters that have come from windsurfers, and people who have gone back and forth and all that, and heard all the arguements for and against. The question that was put to me was are there many kiters that came from windsurfing, that were at the stage where there were landing forward, backwards loops, doing aerials of the lips etc.

Most of the windsurfers that my friend knew that had converted, were not at that stage. i was just wondering if this was true.

The point being that he thinks I should stick to windsurfing as when you get "good", then the rewards and the fun is well well worth it, but the road is long.

So are ex windsurfers who turn to kiting, "crap" according to my mates scale?

Yes we all know about the likes of them, but I was talking about those that had stopped windsurfing all togeather to take up kiting. Are there many ?

My friend is just trying to give me his best advice for me not to give up windsurfing, as the very best windsurfers that kitesurf, still do both, e.g. Naish, but the "crap" ones do give up on windsurfing all togeather. But he says if i get good at windsurfing, then I will enjoy the best of both worlds as he does agree that kiting has its place.

But i am just wondering where i should put my efforts in.

As a crap windsurfer who took up kiting, and didn't seem to get any less crap.

I do both, and usually the criteria for which one I do is convenience.

Kiting happens most cause it fits in the car.

But after a time away from Sailboarding then getting it out, either at Sandy point or Torquay, I always wish I was sailboarding more.

the point is, sure take up Kiting it is way more convenient, but windsurfing is where the real challenges and real rewards are.

Hey NewKiter,
Its simple if you have limited time and wish to enjoy more time on the water with greater option and get to have a smaller car without roof racks, then kiteing is your thing, If you wish to continue to windsurf then go for it, but the first time you go 15ft in the air even if you dont mean it everything changes, it all sailing at the end of the day only you cant make a boat jump very high, you can make a windsurfer jump higher than a boat, but kites where made to fly

Hey Newkiter,

I am an ex-windsurfer from way back, did my penance of about 17 years on the sailboards and was addicted to it like crazy to the point of suddenly faking illness to go home from work everytime I saw the trees dancing (boss cottoned on after a while )

Point is, I spent too many days sitting on the bonnet of the car waiting for those elusive two or three extra knots that wouldn't come, and then i'd go home after another wasted weekend sun burned and pissed off.

I bought a kite in December 1999 "just for those light wind days". That started a passion with kites that runs to this day. I ended up with a quiver of them within a year. My sailboarding gear was relogated to the back of the shed and accumulated dust. After 2 years I decided to sell all my wind surfing gear (2 new boards, 4 new sails, new booms and assorted accessories) and got next to nothing for it. A catastrophic loss.

I have now kited for a little over 6 years and have jumped on a sailboard twice in that time and both times I am reminded why I love kiting. Compact, lightweight, 3 Dimensional fun, easy to learn, ride in as little as 9 knots and up to about 35 knots with ease, fast, oh and nice airtime, and a huge array of tricks and styles of riding to choose from.

Chuck a surfboard into the frey and head to places like Gnaraloo and kiting, IMHO, is more fun and more challenging than sailboarding in the waves because the gear hasn't evolved enough to make it fluid which is a great because it represents a real challenge to try and get more fluid which requires great technique and really sharp skills not to mention the right gear.

I ain't saying poling isn't fun, it is .... in the right conditions (ie Gnaraloo). But flat water blasting doesn't do it for me and I'd never go back. Many broad minded sailboarders do both and have passion for both but chop and change with the conditions. I'm sure most will admit they kite more often.

Bottom line is, have a lesson, see if you like it, if you do, continue, if you don't, stay with the sailboard. And really, don't let other people make up your mind for you, blaze your own trail.

Hope this helps,

Boris

Well then, prepare to hear something very funny!

Apart from that, NewKiter, if you want to kite then go ahead and have fun. Each to their own.

I watched that wee video and, yes it looks pretty good. But I note that he doesn't even land most of the aerials (conveniently edited landings) and the jumps are just ramping off the waves. The wave riding is pretty cool, but again, i see kiters do this all the time. I guess my point is that when someone as good as this guy in the video (and clearly they are making him out to be really good) can't land most of his tricks then I think to myself that maybe windsurfing is simply too hard. My theory about why there are few 'older' really good windsurfers? Because it takes too long to get really good!

I think windsurfing is probably best appreciated by people who do it, because they know how hard it is. Kiting on the other hand...well, any idiot can kite. Just pop down to Dolls point on a windy saturday afternoon.

And I know lots of people who do both - basically, they kite up till about 25knots, then windsurf after that.

This conversation sounds like snowboarding vs skiing arguement of the 80's. Boarding was cool now twin tip skis are cool and next boarding will be cool and then ....

Who cares!!!! as long as your having a good time doing it!!!

If you have the time, and youth is on your side, then do both. If time on the water is limited then kiting is much easier to become proficient at. Both are very different sports. Don't believe how anyone compares either sport unless they actually are good at both.

To stay exactly on topic and answer the original question, two of South Africa's best windsurfers, they were number one and two there for a while, both told me personally that they will never go back. I don't know what level William Tyson was at with rolls, he only has one eye and struggles with inverted kite tricks for spatial orientation, but he competed at the olympics for SA. He also used to carry on like Kitehard about windsurfing and also got rid of all his windsurfing gear once he tried kiting.

I windsurfed for about 15 years and was quite thrilled to do it also beinig frustrated with the marginal conditions I quite often found myself chugging around in. With a kite I can get on the water with less than half as much wind as windsurfing, so I have not been on my windsurfing equipment much at all. The last time I went out my windsurfing stamina has gone with the wind. I was quite surprised how much more physically demanding windsurfing really is unless of course you are kiting unhooked, which I have yet to try. The kiting is new to me and sooooo much fun, also easier to carry back up the beach after the session is finished. It all boils down to a three letter word. F U N . DO IT!

Fair enough kiting is the newer sport, but has anyone started out kiting and converted to windsurfing?
